Do you ever consider calling someone 'Dear' can be an insult?

Dammit sweetcheeks, you don't even know me. I am not your damned 'Dear' and I would sincerely appreciate it if people that don't know me would stop referring to me as 'Dear'. It is a damned insult where I come from. I have a username...it is JolietJake or 'JJ' for short. It is NOT 'Dear'. Understand darling?

@JolietJake Lol, I have been called "honey" several times in North-Western England by shopkeepers. It is surprising the first time, but you get used to it.

When I get called "dear" on here it oes have a false ring to it. I do try to remember that it is connected to customs and language. All I can think of, though, is the scam/spam people who e mail me concerning their late husband's will and my portion in it. They always call me dear.

I don't mind it if I know someone...but it feels weird when a guy says it. But when someone doesn't know me...especially a guy...it's like "WTF???"

@LadyDuck I do not get offended by any names. I know so many countries here have different expressions and I just go with the flow. If I was ever called anything that really bothered me I would face that person head on.

Around here "dear" is just a polite way of talking to a stranger. As in, "Oh, that's ok, dear, you can go first." Just being polite, but I understand it comes off different in other places. Far be it from me to ever call you "dear"

How often do you hear a guy refer to another guy as 'dear' when they are strangers? Just curious...

On Facebook especially that is where sometimes people really do not care before saying something, and personally unless you really know a person why call them terms of endearment like this? Make sure before you do so it is appropriate and it will not offend.

I have been called dear by people in grocery stores. If you don't know my name, don't call me dear or maaaaaaam. Ask my name, if I want you to know it, I will tell you.

I prefer to call you a pain in the butt, amongst other things! ?? I don't like being called dear either. Other pet names are okay on occasion, depending on who is using it. But I'm not Bambi.

In the right context, and with the right inflection of voice, Dear can be quite a scathing term of derision.

Maya Angelou spoke out against calling people "dear," "sweetie," and other such diminutives. It may seem friendly to some. But when these words, which should be reserved as pet names for intimates, are used to address a stranger, it's dismissive and disrespectful.

I think many people think it is polite word to say dear. I completely agree with you but i think there should be no problem if you consider it as a polite word for showing respect .

The main problem is that it is not polite in all cultures. It's like a burp. Some cultures consider a burp a compliment to the chef. Others just consider it rude.
