A photo of a flood in 1950?

After reading a post by @rebelann the photo shared here by me came to mind. We have so many items that belonged to great grandparents and uncles, aunts, etc. including photos no one can identify. We keep these because we knew the people. Does anyone recognize the cars in the picture? We are guessing a 1940ish something! Sad that most photos we have don't have details on the back! Someone said it does not seem like much of a flood, then we remembered that someone might actually have lived in the basements of these buildings. They would surely call this a flood! Do you keep old unidentified photos? This link is to the post by @rebelann
Have you ever found a really old picture you'd taken and wished you had written down when you took it? This is a shot of the area that is now populated by...

Many photos we have were taken before we were born @Hatley with some from 1898. We don't want to part with these but would love to know more.

@PatZAnthony You are lucky to have such old photos. The cars look to me like late 40's but I am not a car expert

That's what Florida streets look like just about every afternoon in the summer due to our daily thunderstorms! lol

Some of the Florida homes we have visited have basements, but we realize most don't @moffittjc We were in one that was so creepy and must have been flooded more than once! This could be Texas, Tennessee or Canada for all we know!

@PatZAnthony Yeah, it's rare to find houses or buildings in Florida with basements, but they do exist here. Mostly in the central and north Florida areas. Most of our state was settled by northerners who retired or relocated here, and when they arrived they built their houses just like they built them up north. It took them a while to realize that they had to do things a little differently in this state! haha

As you said, if the street is flooded like that, we can only imagine the basements and the destruction and ruination that this flood caused! I wish I had some old photos but in the village where I was born, my family didn't have any photos.

Yes it's a pity that people didn't think to label their photos. My mother was pretty good at doing it, so we know who's who.

Kool picture and thank you for the shout out. I remember seeing those old cars when dad was stationed in Germany back in 1956 through 1959, back then people didn't trade in their cars as often as people do today. I think those cars in your photo were from the 1940s.

They claim they've improved on all those products when all they've done is make everything so fragile that they need to be replaced far too often @PatZAnthony

We remember as children everything seemed to be built to last forever. One car, one refrigerator-now everything is designed to be replaced!

You are right, judging by the car it's around the 40's. I have several old photos where there are people I cannot remember I ever met.

Many we never met or the photos are from their youth, not from their 70s or 80s when we think about knowing them @LadyDuck

I don't have any pictures that are unidentified but my Mom did. My sister now has all of her pictures and it would be really fun to go back through them again.

I mostly have my own photos, but I've not put much of them online until the past few years and need to go through them all when I retire and figure out whether to put them into albums, online or what exactly. I usually remember what the picture is about, but not always the people's names in them or the event when they were taken.

Someone we know created a data base with his photos so he will always have them to share. Maybe (or maybe not) we could do that @MarshaMusselman

@PatZAnthony Did he use a known site like flicker, or pixabay or even one of the cloud servers for images like dropbox, or did he set up something he alone was responsible for? I doubt I'd ever want or have the extra time to mess with all my images. I'd like to catalog the ones I already have on my computer and probably won't ever do that either.

Not that big of a flood is right but also right is to a basement it would be. We have photos from when i was a kid 20 years ago without labels. It annoys me. Aha.

Yes, I have some. Some have gotten identified so it was good I kept them. I recognize that car, I think it's earlier than 1950 but they were around in my earliest memories.

The cleanup had to have been hard. I have two huge boxes of photos that I need to go through. I recognize some of the people in them, but not all. I'm not sure what to do with them. That's one of the reasons they're still in the box.

We decided to let go of some that just make no sense @BettyB What will the next generation do with all of these? Put them in a dumpster we guess, so we may as well just move along now!

I have boxes and drawers full of things that I do not have an inkling about. People give them to me. One of these days when I decide to be leisurely, I will do some detective work. September 1951 was the big flood around here. I have heard some first hand stories.

I do have some unidentified photos, but I am keeping them for my younger charges. They will decide what to do with those one day I guess.
