Decided to try online grocery shopping again

It is a long while since I last order groceries online to be delivered to my home. Of course now that I do not get out much, I have decided to try again. There were two major issues with online grocery shopping. Firstly, all too often you would receive products with very little shelf life remaining, which could be a real nuisance. This time I have restricted myself to ordering tinned foods, sugar, coffee and other items that usually last a long while. The other problem was that often products ordered are not in stock, so the store sends alternative items as replacements. You are always entitled to refuse substitutes, but this could result in important items missing from the list, thus you have to go shopping anyway. I shall be going to the supermarket on Friday anyway, so ordering online simply dilutes what I will have to carry. Having canned foods and other heavy items delivered should really make the average shop visit much easier.

Good idea to do online yes. I hope all that you order is indeed in stock and that there are no replacements. Friday is a ways away. Hope the day is well for you friend. What will it be Tescos or Sainsburys or other shops that deliver local?

@Asylum Oh good, hope they are good then. I think there were only a few Asdas if there even were any when I lived UK at the time years ago.

Interesting that you mention online shopping. I was at walmart the other day and they had signs everywhere about ordering online and picking up. (I don't think we have home delivery here) But I thought, no way would I do this. Almost every time I shop I pick up some kind of fresh fruit or veggie, and there are some produce I wouldn't trust anyone to pick out.. For example grapes. I pick out better grapes than my husband, however he picks out better peaches than I do. I can't imagine having a stranger pick out my produce. Then your comment about ordering canned food I think is an excellent idea, that I would order online (after all, how can one mess that up, right?) Unless I order my shampoo. I have a specific shampoo I recently found that Krogers, a local grocery store, carries. But not the store in my town, in stores in other towns we frequently visit. I saw my shampoo in one store, but didn't need it at the time and when we were planning a visit to the other town, my husband called twice trying to find out if they have this shampoo; it couldn't be found. Yet when we got there I checked their shampoo section and then their organic section and there it was. So if Krogers decide to have this ordering online feature, their employees had better learn what the store sells.

I am equally reluctant to order fresh or perishable food this way. Ordering tinned food is different and reduces the weight or bulk of shopping when I do go out.

@Asylum That's great. How are you doing? I just made a commitment to visit my friend on Fridays to help her out. I know this is a road that will be a hard one to travel, but I refuse to allow another friend to go through this without my being there for them.

i think packing the products with the shorter shelf life is a sneaky way to move their inventory. you would be forced to use them up as fast as you can. so they don't tell you when they've substituted items? you only see the substitutes when you receive the deliveries?

Exactly, so if the substitutes are inappropriate you end up with a short delivery.

Why this cute caveman as avatar Barry? I order online heavy grocers items for my Mom, sugar, salt, water, tinned food, nothing else because she loves to go grocery shopping, but she is no more strong enough to carry heavy items.

This is so true, buying cans etcetera online makes further shipping at easier and also ensures that some food is in the house. The avatar of me was taken a long while ago when I was young.

In my experience online shopping doesnt have the pizzazz that real shopping has - like seeing, touching, smelling and all the senses allow us to use while choosing a simple thing like an apple! I hope you enjoy your shopping on Friday even if its a small dose of retail therapy

I agree with the concept of examining food first. Of course, this does not apply to tinned food or sugar etcetera.

Substitutions are disappointing usually. My mom used to send my sister and I to the store but when items weren't available we had to either forgo or substitute. I used to call mom if I had to substitute so she could decide if that was okay so she wouldn't be disappointed, my sis just got what she could because calling was time consuming. Sometimes I got the right item, but wrong brand and that was equally disappointing. But my the convenience of having a shopper or doing it online is wonderful. It far out weighs the problems.

The problem in my area is that the food comes from a warehouse and they may be out of stock on certain items. And, I haven't used such a service as yet because then I also have to pay a fee. Cutting your heavy items down is a good idea.

I usually shop online for things like canned or boxed soups, pasta and juice. The rest of the things I usually want like dairy products or frozen food I go to the store for. I've been lucky so far with the expiration dates on the non perishable foods I order.

I have heard of people ordering their groceries I didn't know they could be delivered. With your experience I don't know if I would try that option, maybe when I get older. Do they charge you for delivery? What store do you order your groceries from? O I just realized you live in England so that would probably be a lot different than the United States. I think Walmart has the online shopping but I think you have to pick them up.

I've never shopped for groceries online, but I can see the advantage if you are unable to carry too much.

In the past I have encountered many advantages to this. For example, if I decide to buy 2 tins of beans and there is an offer available if you buy 5, I am able to buy them without the problem of carrying the extra bulk.

If you don't live too far from the shops and have the money, you could buy a lot of stuff and then take a taxi home. Give the taxi driver a tip and they'll carry the goods to your door.

Good idea. Let someone else carry all the heavy stuff for you! It is quite handy if you do a big heavy shop every now and again just topping up with fresh stuff as you need it!

I work part time in the largest grocery store in Canada. I work in the grocery department. Customers may also order online from this grocery store . . but I would rather find time to do it myself if I were a customer.

I just put an order in at Walmart for the heavy items like you mentioned. Free shipping too on orders over $35 which isn't hard to do when it's groceries. I like to pick out my own perishable items so that requires a trip to the store but thank heavens for online so we don't have to lug all those heavy things.

I feel the same way about fresh or perishable items, but you can safely order two months of tinned food etcetera and make life easier. I have had free delivery in the past, but this time paid £1 for delivery, which is nothing.

I absolutely hate shopping and so online shopping is great for me. I've noticed recently that the prices of things I order have increased rapidly and my budget for shopping is now being blown out of the water and so I am now trying to do things a different way because I just cannot afford it. I agree with you that the shelf life for some things is awful, i have stopped ordering certain things now because of it. But still it takes the strain out of carrying shopping home.

It does help if you can afford to buy groceries in advance. This allows you to buy multibuy items at reduced prices.
