Night in ER

Good morning friends. I'm late getting on here this morning, but it was a bad night. I started having real bad muscle spasms in both legs last night, and argued with myself about going to the hospital. I even went to bed, but the cramping persisted so I tried calling a friend because I didn't think I could drive to the hospital. I couldn't call my daughter, she doesn't answer her phone after a certain time at night, my younger son was working, and I don't have a current phone number for my older son, so I was hoping to get hold of my friend. That didn't work either. After more hesitation, I finally decided to drive to the hospital and find out what was going on with all the muscle spasms I've been having, not just last night but for the past week at least. I worried I would have more trouble with my legs as I got in the car and headed to the hospital, but I got there okay. I checked in at 11:45 PM.
They took blood tests and did an ultrasound. I have a blood clot in the back of my right leg, doesn't surprise me, that's the leg that gives me the most trouble, and where most of the muscle spasms occur, though I had them in both legs last night real bad.
So now I'm on a blood thinner - Xeralto. I just came from getting it filled at Walgreens.
I left the hospital at 4:30 this morning and didn't get to bed until 4:45. I figured I would still be asleep for a few more hours, but I was up at 9:30.
They did say I had an old blood clot, and the one giving me all the trouble is the new one. I need to call my doctor on Monday. I will no doubt get more sleep yet today as I am really tired still. However, I'm also wide awake.
Now, I'm going to get my Bible Study done and then I will be back with you. That is my news. I'm sorry it isn't good news, but I am okay, and that's the main thing.
I hope you're all doing well and are looking forward to a good weekend. Thanks for reading.

You are okay, and that is correct, it is the important thing. You are fortunate the clots have not broken off and gone to your brain, heart or lungs. Blessings.

I have a new number for my friend. I had her cell number, not her home number. I just need to get my older son's new number. They didn't say. Maybe the doctor will have more news about that when I see him this next week. I need to call him on Monday and need to see him as soon as possible.

I understand how severe leg cramps can be. Mine are caused by a different problem than yours but the pain is excruciating. At one time I had muscle cramps from a magnesium deficiency. Started taking magnesium and it solved the problem. Then I began to lead a very sedentary lifestyle. The cramps are back after a few years of not using my muscles. Now I can't walk very far without suffering from the most painful cramps a few hours later. And, when my legs are cramped, I can't walk, I can barely move. They are crippling. In the meantime, I've found quick relief from the cramps by searching online. Sometimes the natural remedies for cramps work, sometimes not. But they aren't a fix for the problem itself, only the symptoms. I wish you luck. I know blood clots are a very serious thing.

@just4him I know the cause. And I know the cure. It's up to me to take care of myself. I don't like doctors, although I realize they serve a purpose at times. At any rate, they will tell me to exercise and most likely give me a referral for physical therapy. I've spent too much time sitting down and neglected to give my legs any exercise. I didn't realize the problems that could occur because of this. Now I know, I've done the research. I used to walk a lot. I got older, retired and got lazy. I never should have stopped walking. Currently, I'm doing a little exercising every day. It's helping. I have to build my legs back up slowly, as doing too much will cause cramping.

@deazil I live a sedentary lifestyle as well. I have been getting out and exercising - swimming every morning for an hour in the pool. Lately doing so was proving very painful and then the intense muscle cramps started happening. I thought it was medication I no longer needed and took myself off one pill for high blood pressure and water. My blood pressure has been good for six months or more now and the swelling in my legs was down, until last night, but probably due to the cramps and clot. I do need to call my doctor and see what he will do. I can only hope I don't need to be on this for too long.

Did they give you a plan on what to do in the meantime? My SIL had to have surgery on her veins to remove the clot in her legs. She is much better now.

At least you know now. Hope the medication is helpful. I used to get cramps in the bottom of my feet. That was in the mid 80's when I jogged about 8 miles per day. I know how badly those cramps hurt.

@AbbyGreenhill I would need to be able to let them in. Living alone, if I were to have a heart attack, I wouldn't even be able to call anyone. It's a very scary thought.

Oh gosh, I hope the blood thinners clear them up. Those blood clots can be painful! Sorry you had to go to the ER, I know how the emergency room is. I'm very sorry for your bad news but on the bright side, you are ok!

I undestand perfectly welll how you feel. And I am glad that you went to the ER and they found out what was wrong.
I had something similar 20 years ago and they found out that I had a rare blood disorder. Been on blood thinner for all that time and will be for the rest of my life.
I hope that the spasms are gone.
