Hanging an Art Quilt show

Eugene, Oregon
September 16, 2017 5:27pm CST
Last Sunday, we drove to the University of Oregon's arch rival's campus in Corvallis to hang a show called "Pathways." It hangs at Oregon State's student union and is part of Benton County, Oregon's annual Quilt Month exhibit. Anne has one in the show (I will post about that). There are about 26 exhibitors and all the quilts will hang in those glass cases with cards identifying the artist and prices as well. There will be guided tours all over town for the months of September and October. The walls inside the cases are plywood. Each quilt has a sleeve with a stick and eye hooks to put little nails through. There was much hammer noise echoing in that big hall. That was my first time hanging a show like that and it was pretty interesting.

An interesting adventure. I have seen some of her others that you have shown us. Very talented wife you have there. My maternal great grandmother sowed quilt pieces together long after she was blind at age 96. My paternal grandfather used to make quilts. I had one of his for years until it just wore out.

I was surprised to learn that there are many male art quilters. Some have been featured in Quilting Arts magazine.

Are the quilts heavy to lift? I imagine that they must have a certain weight, a lot of fabric is used to make them.

@JamesHxstatic I had no idea how heavy they can be. Thank you James.

No, they are really pretty light, though one, about 5 feet by 3 feet looked heavy. Anne's were light.

Fascinating. I'd love to go on an excursion like that. (I saw a 1920s fixer upper house today in Corvallis that is only 100 thousand past our budget.) Your wife is so talented.

How wonderful, James! My grandmother and mom use to quilt, it's a beautiful art! I wish that I'd have followed suit, but I didn't:(

It is painstaking work I know. Anne spends much time on hers.

@kobesbuddy Yes, I have heard of those. These are much smaller, for wall hangings. There is an international organization called SAQUA with website showing some amazing art.

@JamesHxstatic My grandma would have quilting bees, back in the 1960-1990s.

Sounds like a noisy preparation for the quilt show but I'm sure it looks beautiful once it's all done. Looking forward to seeing what Anne has hanging

A lot of work goes into these shows. I hope Anne sold her quilt if that was what she was hoping.

It was and that is a nice student union too. Just around the corner is a big room with couches, chairs, etc. and then there is a small Vets lounge I discovered. Pretty cool.
