Beignets pets de nonne, or nun's farts

I had to make sure I had not misheard what the guy selling pastries at this market stall had said: "pets de nonne". Five for 1 euro. These little deep-fried balls of dough, served with a sprinkling of sugar, hot and sweet, had a name that left me smirking like a schoolboy. Yes, "pets de nonne", or "nun's farts". On a side note, don't let the video put you off, it has a serious message to convey - love the expression on the Labrador at the end though

They look yummy but I'd prefer not to know the translation of the name of them.

"Pets de nonne" is the name in Eastern and Northern France and Belgium. They are called "pets de putain" in Normandy and "pets de vieille" in Southern France. Like @maluse said, it is a pastry eaten during carnival.

@pgntwo In Occitan, I heard them called "pets de vieillo", old women's farts. I suppose it is the same in Catalan. I just had a look to find the name in regular Spanish (Castillan) to improve my Spanish. They are called "suspiros de monja", Nun's sighs.

@topffer And the northern German word sometimes is "Windbeutel", windbag. A little more sanitised, as one might expect

The real name should be "paix-de-nonne " the pronounce is identical to pet-de-nonne, there are other colorful names that you can hear in France for those puff pastry fried beignets, but I prefer not to mention them.

@pgntwo No matter the name those things are good. We make the same here in the south of Switzerland, the day of St. Joseph (March 19th).

@LadyDuck I may have to introduce them here on the day of St. Patrick, 17th March My childhood favourite was a pastry case stuffed with a date paste, deep-fried. The pastry had a little aniseed flavouring in it too. Yum.

Here's a poem wot I wrote: A bubble bath just proved to be a bit too expensive for me, so I ate lots of beans and you know what that means? yaay, I got all my bubbles for free! (Of course now I might need potpourri!)

You can get this speciality also in the south of Germany under the name 'Nonnenfürzle' especially in February around carnival.

Most things battered, dropped in boiling oil, and then coated in sugar or syrup are tasty, for some weird reason.

Life has proven lethal in every known case to-date. And what's worse, as a lethal disease, it's sexually-transmitted too! I wouldn't worry about any sonorous blasts that result from a feed of refried beans, it goes with the territory.

@pgntwo Would not be how I would describe them really in English and in Spanish "Pedos de Monja" has always stuck so to speak.

Oh, my! I don't believe the dog thought it was very funny, pgn... Neither did the old lady or the kid. (I move faster than that if/when someone "lets one rip" and I hear it or smell it, either one. I do everything I can to keep from smelling anything someone else "broadcasts" to the wind!) After all, if you can smell it, you are ingesting fecal matter from that person.
