It Looks Like January May Bring Warmer Weather for Some of Us

It's pretty cold here right now in Mid-Michigan. The high today is 12 F or so. Saturday, January 6 will be the first day it will hit twenty, if it keeps on the current path and after that it will warm up a little. At least the colder weather we've had recently may not return right away. This has been more like January-February weather. It's not normally quite so cold in December. Course, many of the months this year have been screwy and not normal. Some areas around the Great Lakes have gotten a lot of snow recently and today is supposed to be the last day for the time being. We got snow over the weekend, but I'm happy to say we only got a couple of inches over a few days. I heard that parts of PA got sixty inches. Whether the area it was forecast for really got it or not I don't know. Here is a link for how lake effect snow in the Great Lakes affects the surrounding states, if you're interested.
Deep, cold Arctic air spilling over the Great Lakes will keep the lake snow factory churning.

@rebelann I agree and hope we never see that much here. Two ft is the most is want to deal with at one time, and I've seen that before.

We had a dusting of snow most of Sunday and those visiting from the south said that schools would have closed already. Maybe it was a few days before Christmas rather than the weekend. Whether or not PA got the sixty inches I don't know. We've gotten a few feet at once before, but that's not happened this year yet, thankfully.

I wish it were 12 here. I'd be getting ready to leave for the pool. We're still in sub zero temps with even harsher wind chills. Though it's supposed to warm up to 11 today and snow by tonight, giving us almost an inch of snow. However, it will only be tonight and then we're going right back to the deep freeze over the weekend.

I looked at the outside thermometer after starting our cars earlier and it was about eight. I doubt know what the windchill is today or what it was yesterday. I don't check the weather as much when we're not cleaning windows. Although, we will be needing to do monthlies soon, but we'll probably wait till it warms up a bit more.

@MarshaMusselman I like to know what it is, so I can know whether I can go to the pool or not. It's just been too cold to leave the apartment. I hope it warms up soon so you can get at your windows when you need to.

@just4him I hope the businesses won't mind us waiting till it warms up. Most won't but there's a pizza place we used to do bi-weekly and now it's monthly. Not sure how bad they will be if we have to wait much longer.

The weather has been crazy. We went from one day being below zero to two days later being 70°F to the following day being 20°F. It has been predictable. It seems to be all over like this not just where I am at in PA.

@shaggin Yes, and it can be just a few degrees colder but often it's quite a bit different. I don't know whether enough people look at the wind chills. Just the other day I saw a family leave the store. Everyone had a coat on, but the adults had theirs zipped up and didn't make sure their young daughter did the same. The wind chills that day were 8, I don't know how much colder it got at night when they were leaving.

Our temps swung around like that last week as well. Although our highs were in the fifties, nicer than the -20 of the week before though. Now it's back into the twenties with colder wind chills. It may warm up slightly in the days to come into the thirties. Not sure whether there will be a wind chill too or not. Along with more snow.

@MarshaMusselman .......For several years it was actually warmer here in the winter. This winter has been cold. I live in a valley and so we don't usually get a lot of snow here.

I've always thought Idaho to be cold in the winter. Maybe similar to Nebraska and the Dakota's?

Its bitter cold here, especially at night. It sounds like a snow storm is headed my way, too. Might be freezing rain if it warms a tad. I sure hope not either way.

Freezing rain's not any better especially when it freezes our car doors shut. We've had that twice thus far just in the last two weeks. We have more snow coming over the weekend if it doesn't veer elsewhere.

I'm in Canada right across the border on the shore of Lake Ontario. We are getting lots of snow. Haven't heard much about Buffalo this winter, they are between two Great Lakes and get dumped on a lot...much more than we are...

@MarshaMusselman I have my fingers crossed for tomorrow, we are being picked up by the air bus and driven to Toronto to fly south. Fingers crossed the snow is light and doesn't screw up the airport.. When I was younger and was able to ski I loved winter, now, not so much. Hope you get light snow too.

It is usually maybe 35 here this week which is colder than normal so what little snow we did get for Christmas eve and Christmas day has not melted yet. Just Thankful I live in an area that our colder snowy weather is few and far between.

That almost sounds like NC. Although when I lived the it did get down to the low thirties, but nothing lasted long, neither snow nor chilly temps.

I am enjoying living in the snow-free environment of Florida for the winter. I saw some snow before I left.

Maybe one day in the future we can move south for the winter too. I'd even move south permanently if I could afford it. I'm thinking of Tennessee, but we'll see.

I think, probably, our temps are very similar to yours unless yours is below zero at present? We got down to either four last night or a bit under/below zero, but at least it's above zero at present. If my car would warm up quicker it wouldn't be so bad.

23 isn't fun, but at least it's better than the teens. Next week we should be where you are today. I doubt it will warm up much more than that for a while, but we won't know until then.

Our colder weather is normally Jan, feb. This year its topsy turvey. Yesterday and today into the forties and then back down to twenties. But as we head toward march it shouldn't get much colder than twenty-thirty any more. Sorry, I need the temp graph in front of me to show the correlation to your temps. What's the average coldest temps you get most years and what month?

Many years there is a lift in the temps in January known as a January thaw. It so happens that today its fifty, but the temps will fall again tomorrow. It should stay around the freezing nark for a few weeks or so they say. Most of the piled-up snow is melted, but we'll probably get more snow soon.

It's sunny in the low 70s out here. All that snow will be good for winter sports anyway.

Yes, those that like snow sports will be happy I'm sure. I know that the upper peninsula has had snow for a few months already along with the upper section of the mitten of Michigan. I would gladly bask in your seventy degree weather instead.
