Do we really help users by answering questions that are answered in the Guidelines/FAQ/Term pages?

I'm as guilty of it as anyone, but all we are really doing is giving the people an excuse not to read them.
Admin used to have a policy (pre-May 2013) of not allowing questions like that to be valid 'discussions' here.
The idea, I believe, was to force members to read those pages to answer their questions (which in reality, everyone should read them often enough to be familiar with them).
Maybe if we really want to 'help' people asking these questions, we should just start giving them a link to the appropriate page...

@JolietJake Such posts often get a large number of responses due to being easy to comment on. This tempts the member to submit a similar post soon afterwards.

@Asylum Which is why I wish they'd go back to the old policy of disallowing them

Why people would join and then not know things is proof they never read the Terms they agreed to when joining

I am too lazy to answer these or to give them a link, or a like.

that's why i'm now quoting (copy/pasting) directly from the community guidelines and faq, hoping that other members (both old and new) also coming across those discussions will also read them because the way they understand or remember the rules might not be the same as how mylot defines them.

I just saw someone tell someone else (in a different site discussing myLot) "I think you need to reread the guidelines and FaQs again. I hope you know about the 100 minimum characters post limit."
Oh really???
You know as well as I that there has never been a minimum character count here, but this person claims it is in the Guidelines.

@JolietJake maybe they're juggling several online sites so all the different guidelines from different sites are now mixed up in their head! hahaha!
there are posts/topics that were not allowed in the old mylot that i'm still wishing were still in effect.

@hereandthere I saw someone yesterday say "I spent a lot of time yesterday but did not earn what I used to earn. It made me angry. I wish I understand how mylot does their mathematics. When you think you are beginning to understand the formula, suddenly, everything changes."
Of course, nothing has changed...it is simply another one of those people thinking they get paid according to their actions. There is no 'formula' of A + B = C, but trying to convince them otherwise is a losing battle most days.

I agree with you. Giving them a link is exactly what Mylot Admin want us to do.

I don't mind trying to explain something if they don't quite understand what they read, but they should at least read it

I post this link all the time when I welcome a newbie, many times I see Maluse that posted before I had the time to do. Sometimes you or Owlwings are the first to post. I wonder how many "old users" never took the time to go through the Help section. According to what I read, many.

@JolietJake I noticed, some insist with their own personal version and refuse to read the FAQ.

I've seen many returning users that try to contradict people about things being different and refuse to read the newer FAQ section

What was said about it creating more interactivity is relevant, but mainly your efforts to add information as to the basic myLot guidelines does offer others more encouragement to actually go to the FAQs page and read the guidlines because like me, I will read them but forget some of them over time and it is always helpful for newbies to get directed by more experienced people here at myLot, to keep them in line so they don't go astray and that will actually get more people, who want to interact and do it by the rules, to feel more self confident.

@kobesbuddy If I would be offended by what is written then I wont write it. I try to stick to my life, the adventures are boring but it is what it is.

@andriaperry And I don't view your life as boring, in the least bit! I love hearing about your daily work and improvements on your property
I have unintentionally offended people.

Some of us are so darn afraid of offending someone. Then, we end up offending about 100 people with a writing!
(I'm talking about myself)

I've seen users here state they have no intention to read them, they'll just ask because they "don't have time to read them".
Of course, some of them wind up banned eventually.

I think that is an awesome response. We all have the responsibility to read the terms, whether we do or not is up to each individual. Referring people to read the terms I think is a great response. Thanks for the discussion.

Some people read the FAQs, etc. but may not understand everything that is outlined there. And since there is no separate forums section on the site, asking others (in a discussion) is the next option.

I think this is fine, to a degree. But, some people(me included) could read those pages every single day, and still need to be reminded at times. It's a friendship roll, we probably already know the answer, but hearing those words from a trusted friend, helps us receive security and confirmation. Many members here on My Lot doubt their own abilities. So we reach out to someone whom we consider to be strong and well grounded on this site. That's a compliment, in disguise!

I have read the guidelines often but because of memory problems I forget what I read. So if I do something wrong, it isn't because I did not read the guidelines but because I easily forget what I read. Besides, I think sometimes it is easier for people to remember when there is a friendly discussion about the guidelines. I also think it does help people, not only in remembering but in getting to know other mylotters also.
