So I finally let Scar take me for a walk this morning, and he spied a turtle that evidently dug itself out of hibernation today.
With the frogs singing and the crocus blooming and all, pretty sure spring is about a month away.
Pretty sure this is an Eastern Box Turtle, although I didn't want to disturb it and clean the shell off better.

@DianneN Had one of those show up in the driveway last year

[em]doh[/em] We went through this last year. I came home from work a couple times and found a snapping turtle a few feet from the driveway after a heavy rain....

I knew it was a type of box turtle from the markings although they are still fairly obscured from mud

No, it is not a tortoise, and not all turtles live in water.

The terminology (turtle/tortoise/terrapin) depends on which version of English you speak. We don't have any native tortoises, turtles or terrapins in the UK and tend to refer to anything which lives on land and has feet as a tortoise and anything which lives in water and has flippers as a turtle. In British English, terrapins seem to come somewhere in between, since they have feet rather than flippers but live mainly in (fresh) water.

@JolietJake I remember you said it was a snapper, I am glad that this cannot harm both Scar and you.

@JolietJake Eons ago we lived in northern Idaho. I didn't see that a turtle was on the road. I ran it over with the truck. What a bloody mess. I still feel horrible that I did that.

Don't think I'd ever seen one that had just come out of hibernation before

That is pretty cool. Hope the turtle doesn't get run over or anything.

It's all the way down at the end of the yard near the tracks in the treeline, it should be okay

What a cool thing for him to find, does he mess with the turtles when he finds them?

i've only ever seen two living turtles in the state my entire life.
either they hide really well or our population must be low..

I'd been wondering to myself yesterday how soon it would be before they started showing up since my frogs became active about 3 days ago

We have snapping turtles, but I've never actually seen one in the wild. Tawas Lake use to be their favorite pond, but now I'm not sure if it is. He's huge! Most of the turtles I see crossing the road, are a lot smaller.

That's a really cool turtle I have seen them on craigslist sadly for sale. Very cool colors. I wish I lived somewhere where I could walk through the woods.

What an interesting find. It's like when we were at the Big Island where we stopped at a beach of the Ali'i Sanctuary, Pu'uhonua o Honaunau National Historical Park, Big Island. We visited the Big Island and on this stop we stretched, listened to the lecture and went sight seeing by the beach. A pair of sea turtles came swimming up to the beach as we were sight seeing. We all took pictures for nature does as it do and when they introduce themselves to you as the box turtle did it's spectacular!
