Forty-one beanies. I think that's enough

While we were touring, I started crocheting beanies for Vince to take to Nepal when he goes there in October. He is also taking a suitcase full of children’s clothing to distribute. I either bought cheap wool in dollar stores or from thrift shops. When I had a spare minute waiting for Vince to book into a caravan park or while filling the car with fuel, I’d do a few rows. So now I have 41 beanies of varying sizes, patterns and colours and I think that is probably enough. I’ve tried to vary them but have taken care with the colours to try to make them attractive. Now that I’m back into crocheting perhaps I’ll start making beanies for premature babies again. I don’t get nearly so impatient when I have to wait if I have something to occupy myself with. Are you the same or can you just sit and wait without needing to fill your time with something other than thinking?

You crocheted a lot of beanies and they all look very nice. I think that 41 are enough. You can rest now.

@JudyEv I was curious to know why 41 and not 40.

@LadyDuck I counted them at 36 then refused to count them again until I'd finished the wool. And now I have 41.

Thank you. Yes, I think 41 is enough although it isn't a very 'round' number. Maybe I need to do one more!

They all look so great. I wish I could have such a talent to make them. My mom is very good at it but unfortunately I can't learn from her.

Some things come easily if you've been doing it for a while. I can crochet but I'm pretty bad at sewing - very bad in fact which is a shame as sewing would be much more useful. But thanks for saying they look great. I'm pleased I have so many.

That's so wonderful - a great way to pass the time and for a great cause! I actually don't mind just sitting there to think . . . it's rare I get time like that! Otherwise, I might write "lists" (things to do, groceries, the week's menu, etc etc) or grab a magazine if it's there.

@JudyEv These days I truly rely on my lists - so it's best to get on them whenever possible!

I love crocheting and I made a lot of hats in my day. I once made one for granddaughter Amie on a trip back from Vermont in the car. That is wonderful that you ,ade so many for the children in Nepal.

Once my mother knitted a pair of socks. For some reason we had to watch a film before she finished them. (I don't remember the details. It was so long ago). She finished the second sock knitting in the dark (with five needles!) while watching the film.

@MALUSE They were very experienced back then I would think. My Mum used to knit socks with five needles too but I don't know if she ever knitted in the dark.

I just hope they like them. In the photos Vince brought back last time, a lot of the children had hats of some sort so I hope I haven't wasted my time.

@JudyEv They look nice, they will keep them warm, and they were stitched with love, and that's got to count for something.

I hope they like them. Vince and his friends are also going to a children's cancer hospital. They've employed a backpacker to paint Aussie murals on the walls of the wards there so perhaps that is where some of the beanies will end up.

I did not know one crochet with wool. You are amazing. Shame on me. I have so far in my entire vintage years neither knitted nor crocheted. I have done tatting but very very little.

@allknowing I'd often have my crochet with me in the car but I couldn't do it while we were driving or I'd get carsick. But I'd do it at odd moments - waiting for apppointments for instance.

I never learnt to tatting. That is pretty complicated too. I used to crochet big jackets in thick wool and sell them through a craft shop. Also shawls, scarves, baby clothes, etc.

@tammys85 Sudoku is one of my favourites and I also like the ones like crosswords but every square is numbered and you have to work out which number is which letter. Maybe it's called codewords or something like that.

If you have baby wool or even soft wool of any kind, there might be a need at a nearby hospital for beanies for prem babies. I did a heap of them once till I ran out of wool.
