There are many foods associated with the Southern United States that are mostly found and served there. For Southerners and those of us who have visited and dined in the South, which Southern foods would list as your favorites? Here is my favorites list, maybe it is also on yours: 1. Hush Puppies- A delicious deep fried finger food. Shaped like golden brown nuggets they taste great dipped in a sauce of your choosing. 2. Fried Catfish- The fish is dipped into seasoned cornmeal and buttermilk. When I was down South and ate at a place called a Fishcamp I would pair it with hush puppies. 3. Shrimp and grits- A nice creamy mixture that goes great together. Never thought of pairing those two together. 4. Chicken and Dumplings- A hearty comfort food that speaks for itself. 5. Cheerwine- Well, not really food but you need something to wash all those dishes down. And you can't find this soda pop up North. No, it is not wine, no alcohol here, but the beverage has been around since 1917, so the company must be doing something right. Here are some other foods common to the Southern U.S. Have you tried any of these items? -Moonpies -Chitlins -Cheese Straws -Pimento Cheese -Fried Okra I am sure My Lotters from the Southern (U.S.) can mention a couple more interesting foods not mentioned here. Care to add anything? Thanks for reading and your input.... Source- Eat This Not That Photo- Chicken & Dumplings thecountrycook.net

There are things of your list that I like. I like fried catfish (the recipe that you describe) as well as fried okra. I like grits, but for breakfast, without shrimps, with only a little butter. I also like fried chicken and from Louisiana seafood gumbo and jambalaya.

@dgobucks226 I took Southern cooking classes in New Orleans when we visited. When I visit a country and I like something, I want to learn how to prepare it, so I can cook it myself once back home. I bought Filé powder because I know that this is not available here.

Wow, are you sure you were not secretly born and raised in the Southern USA and shipped off to Italy later, just kidding. Jambalaya is an excellent meal choice to add to our list. Catfish is really good as long as you avoid those tiny bones, lol.

Ha, wished I lived there deleriousinIdaho. I had these meals during my childhood when visiting relatives in North Carolina during summer vacations. Although I have been able to find grits here in NJ. To enjoy homemade hush puppies again washed down with some Cheerwine pop.

I like chicken n dumplins but my favorites are the veggies which can't be found all over the south anymore. My fav are turnip greens and mustard greens, both are a lot healthier than spinach. I think fried chicken and corn on the cob is another good one.

I like most of the things on your list except for cheerwine and shrimp and grits. I love shrimp and I love grits, but not mixed together. How about banana pudding and collards?

@dgobucks226 Is it the collards you're not familiar with? A lot of southerners love them (a green leafy veggie that's cooked down), but I've never learned to like them.

I can say, I've never had any of those. I guess that makes me a true northerner. Cheese straws sound interesting and I think I saw those in the store.

@dgobucks226 I've seen them in Wal-Mart, but since anything dairy is off my diet for the moment, it will be a while before I eat cheese again.

Definitely a winner. I just found that chicken and dumplings originated in Canada (Quebec). And the U.S. where it was popularized by a woman in Virginia who added the chicken part to the dumpling recipe.

Oh yes, southerners sure can cook "C." My Aunt from North Carolina made the best fried chicken I ever tasted. With biscuits, potatoes, fresh garden tomatoes and beans it was one filling meal. Chicken and dumplings is very good!

I make cheese straws but I'm not sure they would be the same thing. Hush Puppies are a brand of shoe here. I haven't heard of a food here that is called that. They sound a bit like chicken nuggets.

Hush puppies are a brand of shoe here also. But this hush puppy is made from cornmeal fried into a ball. It is served with fish as a side order. Kind of like onion rings but much tastier in my view.... Photo-thedailymeal.com
