Question of the Day: Worst Foods For Your Heart

If you were to advise someone on maintaining a healthly heart what list of the foods would tell them to stop eating? I'm sure we could create quite a list!
Here are a few items I discovered, that may not be so obvious, when talking about foods which can contribute to heart disease. They are loaded with sodium, a contributor to high blood pressure which damages our blood vessels. And some contain other harmful ingredients.
So, avoid these items or substitute low salt alternatives:
-Canned vegetables: High in preservatives and salt. Consider a switch to frozen veggies.
-Frozen Dinners: Again, loaded with sodium. Even an item like Lean Cuisine is loaded with the stuff.
-Cottage Cheese: Yes, although it may not taste salty, one cup can equal 700 milligrams. Consider a swap to Greek Yougurt instead which is low salt and high protein.
-Frozen pies: Here the culprit is trans fats, a worrisome substance for your heart and waistline.
-Chinese Take Out: Sugary sauces and deep fried items are packed with calories, fat, sodium, and carbs.
-Fruit Juice: What? It’s natural! It’s packed with Vitamin C! All true, but it is also packed with sugar. About 36 grams per cup, more than what's in a Krispee cream donut.
These were some recommendations from an article I found by "Eat This Not That." Any other foods we should avoid? Take a look at this link to see the complete list.

@dgobucks226 And I quite like my salt - and my fat - and my sugar!

I think that too much fat, too much salt and too much sugar are not good for the heart or anything else.

If you squeeze an orange and add nothing, this is the only safe fruit juice to have, I said 1 orange, not 5 because all fruits contain sugar. I buy nothing canned or ready made and to cook I only use a bit of olive oil or butter, but I keep the quantity very low. There is a natural cottage cheese low in sodium here.

Yes, very true about juices. Items like V-8, tomato sauce and ketchup are other products which also contain harmful additives like sugar and salt. Olive oil is definitely a great choice to cook with...

Sodium is a killer. I like cottage cheese. Before I started this food program to better health and weight loss, I considered it, but at 17% of the daily allowance for sodium, it remained on the shelf.
You can buy unsweetened juices, they are naturally sweetened and you don't need any more sugar than that. Read the labels to determine if the sugar is natural no sugar added, or if sugar is one of the ingredients.
Pasta is another thing that can get you in the waistline. Substitute spaghetti squash and you'll be on your way to good health. Along with pasta is all purpose flour. Substitute the nut flours. I use almond and coconut. You can still have your pancakes, but they will be healthier for you. Instead of syrup, use unsweetened applesauce. Apples are naturally high in sugar. You won't realize there isn't added sugar in it.

All excellent points! I especially like the use of unsweetened applesauce as a substitute.

@dgobucks226 You can't tell it's unsweetened because of the natural sugar in apples.

It is so difficult to eliminate foods containing salt. Most foods contain it in some form or other.

Some red meats are high in saturated fat, which raises blood cholesterol. High levels of LDL cholesterol increase the risk of heart disease. Chicken contains much less....

Crisps or Chips as a snack, tasty but fatty and loads of salt. I try to snack on pop corn with just a little sea salt sprinkled over it @dgobucks226 .

Any "hangover burger" served for breakfast at your local bar. You know, triple meat, triple cheese, ham, bacon, fried egg. Have to admit that I've had more than my fair share of those!

Yep, some of the worst culprits. Loaded with saturated fat and salt. Even items like cold cuts, soups, and bacon should be limited in your diet...
