Not my Family

My friends know I usually write about my family and daily happenings. Today will be a bit different. Our ice princess will leave for summer camp in Maine three days before school is officially out for her. New York City public schools are notoriously late in ending. She is thrilled and excited to return to camp to see all her friends and create more memories. However, none of campers know who they are having fun with or even bunking with. Last year, for example, she bunked with Lionel Richie’s granddaughter - Nicole Richie’s daughter - and they texted and phoned each other throughout the year. She also went water skiing with the daughter of the lead singer of The Red Hot Chili Peppers. The girls in the photo are the daughters of the King and Queen of Spain. Each had her own body guard dressed as a camp counselor. The most wonderful thing about our granddaughter’s camp is that the girls are there to have a wonderful fun filled summer. Our grandson’s school finished the year last Thursday, and he leaves for camp in New Hampshire next week. And to add to his excitement, his ice hockey team won the playoffs! Well, I guess this was about my family, afterall. I can’t help myself.

And why should you? lol It never hurts to make connections with people who are important but mostly who live a different sort of life, it gives one a more worldly view. It is good for these girls to see how the other 1% lives as well and experience real life.

The odd thing is that none of the campers know anything about the other kids. My granddaughter skated with Madonna’s adopted daughter and only knew her as another skater. At camp they are just other campers. I think it’s amazing.

@BelleStarr Exactly. That’s why they all have to wear camp uniforms to keep them all the same.

A couple of times I went to Girl Scout Camp at Hawthorne Ridge..Nobody famous attended. My son never went to camp. I guess we never thought about sending him, and he never asked to go. He has been camping though.

Wow that is some camp, rich people and their bodyguards. I'm sure it is much different then the summer camp I remember, Three weeks living in a tent and the only running water was the river that was about a 1/4 mile from our tents. Different strokes for different folks I guess.

Only those two girls have bodyguards. None of the campers realize it. My camp wasn’t so great either. I couldn’t stand the yucky bottom of the lake.

@DianneN LOL, yucky bottom. I think the camp my parents sent me to was punishment. I did learn a lot about survival in the wilderness though, but at the time it just sucked.

I went to sleepover camp and wasn’t crazy about roughing it. lol My sons went and enjoyed their camp, but it was only a little over an hour away. Lots of their friends went, too. It’s good for our grandkids to get out of the city for the summer.

We all bleed the same-it's good they don't know about famous kids being there. Money comes and goes, so does fame... We will all be buried like everyone else. This life is quickly fleeting. The real importance is where we will spend eternity. =)

@DianneN So the camp allows the campers to go off-site for extracurricular activities?

@moffittjc Only off site for planned excursions with all the staff to such places as the beach with lobster bakes, etc. All camp activities are done at the camp except for ice skating practices. The camp provides a camp bus to the rink which is 5 minutes away. Of course there is supervision and the coaches are ones from NYC that she used to work with.

The little Ice Princess is so excited for camp. Of course, she knows nothing about whom she is bunking with. lol. The only reason she goes to this particular camp is that she liked it when she saw it much better than her mother's former camp, and that she can take a 5 minute bus ride to the closest ice rink every day with a couple of other campers to practice her routine.

They both love camp so much. It’s good for them to get out of the city for the summer. She doesn’t have a clue who these campers are, but has made many interesting friends. Thank you! This was the second playoff he won since becoming goalie. He worked hard at it all year. We’re all so proud of him.

@smileyhema Kids today are amazing! She took tap dancing lessons to help with her rhythm when performing in figure skating, and was "discovered" during a rehearsal in New York City. She had to send in a head shot, a resume, and bring in sheet music to sing with piano accompaniment for a performing theater group. She got the part and did tap, ballet, and singing on the stage for a few years when she was about 7 years old. We had to buy tickets to see her perform off Broadway. lol. She had to give it up, because it interfered with her figure skating lessons and practices, but it was fun while it lasted.

I used to write about my family but we moved and they are in Colorado. My two young's sons are in Washington and came at Thanksgiving. That is great that you grandchildren get to enjoy their childhood. It should be that way for all children.

How exciting for them to meet celebrity families! I guess to them, they are kids just like they are. Being adults we would probably act differently, all caught up in the moment.

The kids are clueless, which is good. My son had the lead singer of the Red Hot Chili Peppers come up to him and compare their cameras. I don’t know who he is, but my son does and almost fell over. Nicole Richie wouldn’t go swimming on Parents Visiting Day, so my DIL took her daughter and my granddaughter out swimming and sliding. Her daughter thought my DIL was a cool mommy.

@DianneN It sounds like a celebrity camp. That would make sense. It sounds like a camp where they can just be kids and have a good time. So they go to different camps. Mazal Tov about his ice hockey team. Why not write about what is important to you and that is your family.
