A handy app on our phone

For better or worse, I don’t have a mobile phone. Vince has one which I can use if I need to but I’m battling to answer the thing let alone do anything else on it. However, he has now loaded an app which intrigued me. It’s called First Responder and can be activated if you have a medical emergency. It will dial an emergency number (I think after you verify you want to call them) and then pinpoint your position exactly to enable services to reach you more rapidly. I think this is a great idea. If I had an accident in a town and was asked for the nearest streets, I’d probably have no idea. The other thing that was pretty groovy is that, if you need to do CPR, it has a beeper that helps you keep the correct rhythm if you are doing chest compressions. How cool is that? Incidentally, the compressions need to be much faster than I would have thought. The photo is from our recent house-boat trip on the Loire Canal, France, showing our boat in the canal and going over a river.

Cool boat ride and funny it is a boat going OVER a river. lol. As for the app, I think that sounds like an AWESOME app, and wonder if there is one available in the States. I imagine there is one, but I have just never heard of it. But cool idea and very useful.

There seems to be apps for all sorts of things. It was a bit strange going over a river. Going over highways also seemed a bit odd.

@JudyEv Yeah, I don't think I have ever seen anything like that. Certainly different.

It felt strange to be over the water and even stranger, in other places, to have cars passing by underneath.

Yes, especially as our property isn't the easiest to find or direct people to.

Good for you - no cell phone. As much as I love mine - I do think society is the worse off for them. But as you point out - it is very handy in case of emergency

I used to rant and rave about them but I have to admit they can be extremely handy. There seems no end to what they can and can't do.

@FayeHazel You're right about them being small computers. They have maps and information about just about everything.

I can believe that. And the CPR thing is useful too. I would have been doing the compressions much slower.

That is an impressive app and I have not yet seen that one yet. I hope it can be used in my place as well. Our medical emergency system in here is not yet as connected to the mobile world yet. Smart Phones are indeed getting smarter and smarter and some can really make our lives comfortable especially during emergencies.

@JudyEv Maybe I should check it out if that app can be used here or maybe there's an equivalent app like that in our place.

We have a phone with an "emergency button", when you press the button they know from which number it comes and they know your position. I have an old mobile phone that I only keep in my bag in case of an emergency. My husband has a smart phone... it's in a drawer.

It's good if your position can be relayed to anyone who needs to know - ambulance, police, etc.

There ARE a lot of handy apps for phones. There's one in beta testing that we looked at for our son that would automatically call me if his smart watch (also connected to his phone) detected a seizure. We finally seem to have landed on the right mix of medication, though, so not as much a worry as it was a year and a half ago!

I have my cell phone for emergency calls only, Those elderly ladies (tenants) wanted my cell number, I told one no and if she got it and called I would throw the phone out the car window, the expression on her face was priceless. BUT I told her she has the business number that I use at home too, that is all she needs.
