Wild Flowers for Less Yard Work

My sister has the most beautiful wild flowers growing in her yard. She doesn't have to fertilize or weed them. They need practically no attention. Wild flowers require very little maintenance and they have no need for fertilizers. You can find them in fields, near lakes and streams. Pull them up by the roots and replant in your yard. Native plants are adapted to the local soil and that's where they get their nutrients. Never fertilize as fertilize will kill or make them weak and sickly.
I used to grow wild flowers, I had morning glory, maypops, frost flowers, queen Anne's lace and others. Mine were in the back yard near my vegetable garden.
If you have clay, add compost or manure to loosen the soil. I had some clay and I used a little compost in the soil when I planted mine. Wild flowers need practically no maintenance. Just plant them in the ground and watch them grow. You can find all colors of wild flowers. Plant them close together to prevent weeds and if you find weeds are growing in your wildflowers , you can weed if you like. But it doesn't hurt to let weeds grow among them.

How lovely they'd be to see all the time too! I get my potted flowers from Lowes, their starter plants with flowers. This last one I have lasted me for a few months and growing strong. I've repotted my pretty dhalia in my ceramic teapot that the lid got broken.

Yummy avocado. Prices have climbed recently so you're so lucky to have avocado tree and I hope it gives you lots of pears! The little dhalia are very delicate and tiny and I enjoy them a lot...color is fuchsia color.

@oahuwriter I don't have avocado trees, mine are only in pots and they are small. Avocado trees don't grow in our area. I planted mine from seed for the leafy plants. In fact they are not very leafy and I'm about ready to throw them out.

I can't have wild flowers growing in my yard. Many of them set off my allergies. It is much less painful for me to grow things like roses, Lily of the Valley and ferns than it is to let wild flowers grow here. (Even the Pampas Grass I had at the other house could cause me problems when they "flowered". Any pollen from them that got on my skin burned holes.) *shrug*

@RubyHawk I've never heard of "Pretty My Nights" flowers before but of course, I do own some.
I just stepped out on my front porch and took pictures of the two we have there. (I did set them down, one on a chair and the other on some potting soil so I could get better photos of them. I'm sure if any of the neighbors saw me they think I must be going crazy.
After all, it is 1:45 am.)

Oh, my goodness, that's terrible that you have those allergies with plants. But roses and Lily of the Valley are beautiful too. I like all flowers and some I used to grow I haven't seen in years. Pretty My Nights come to mind but others I liked , I never see.

I just add them as they volunteer so far. I would love to have wildflowers and herbs everywhere. The pollinators would love it as well.

that'd be the funny thingy 'bout weeds, they're most oft a sign 'f a deficiency'n the soil 'n 's they break down provide nitrogen. used to've loads 'f wildflowers out here'n the yard 'n pasture. years 'f drought 'n then the hubs o'ergrazin' did 'way with many. ours don't seem to cater to bein' uprooted'n transplanted. when we've 'normal' rains, 'tis quite the abundance. sure looks purty when such occurs. our native grasses 'nly reach a max 'f 12" tall 'n i'm prone to not mowin' those areas't all (wildflowers'n native grasses - the hubs's planted bermuda way back when we married whilst i' twas't work one day...). our wildflowers'n grasses do 'ppreciate some nutrients, our soil so alkaline. used to spread composted manure twice a year 'n such 'twas quite lush. perhaps one day all the cards'll fall'n the correct places 'n they'll be thrivin' once 'gain.

What a great idea. Queen Anne's lace seems to grow wild in Ireland too.
