Are you ruthless or just ruth?

A friend is the most obliging, peace-loving person but is having trouble with one son who has now called her ‘ruthless’. For some reason, this made me think that there is no ‘ruthful’ or even ‘ruth’ in English. At this point, I thought I’d better google it and wouldn’t you know it? Both ruth and ruthful are actual words. ‘Ruth’ means, according to the Merriam-Webster online dictionary, ‘compassion for the misery of another’ or ‘sorrow for one’s own faults’. ‘Ruthful’ means ‘full of ruth’ or ‘full of sorrow’. So that’s my something learnt for the day. ‘Uncouth’ is another word which is quite common. ‘Couth’ is not quite so common but is an actual word. I find language and words fascinating. I don’t have a photo for ruthful or ruthless so here is a bonus kangaroo picture.

I was quite surprised to find it was a word. I won't be using it as I don't believe any of my friends would have ever heard of it.

It is always fun to learn new words. It's funny to me that we use both ruthless and uncouth all the time, but never ruth or couth. Hmm. Might have to start spreading those around a bit and see if they catch.

@porwest It used to really bug me. Say something and out come the mobiles. But I've had to admit that sometimes it's really handy to be able to get instant answers.

Lovely, thanks for today's educational session on the English language! I had no idea about ruth and ruthful. Those are words you just don't hear anyone saying these days. Maybe we should all start using them and make it 2019's buzzing trend words! And I learned something new today as well...that learnt is an actual word!

Yes, I'm allowed to spell 'learned' as 'learnt'. Perfectly legitimate. Did you look it up?

Don't take any notice of unkind people. And here is a kangaroo to make you feel better. If you type 'kangaroo' or 'kangaroos' in the search part of myLot, you should be able to see more posts about kangaroos.

Probably but we only use 'ruthless'. I 'm sure that's common in your country too. What about 'gruntled'? That's one I forgot to mention. I never hear it in everyday speech but it's a word. I hear disgruntled occasionally.
