Homemade Potato Salad

The family talked about getting together tonight for dinner at a restaurant, and I thought, while going out to restaurants IS nice, it's really a total waste of money. Why not just stay at home and cook? So I suggested we could have a cookout at our place. The main dish will be BBQ chicken on the grill. But I also decided to make my homemade potato salad tonight. Had to pull out the old recipe since I have not made this in quite a while. It has its own unique flavor with the oregano and Italian seasonings. But it is always good, and everyone always enjoys it. Off to go get the process started as we speak.

@LindaOHio I am getting hungry just thinking about it. My sister will be bringing something too and I am sure my mom will as well. It will be a regular smorgasborg.

Should be good. Just got done boiling the potatoes and now have them immersed in a cold water bath in the fridge. I will make the salad in a bit. I'll just need to parboil my chicken, season it up and get it ready for the grill as well.

What time is dinner? Sounds like my potato salad, love it. Sometimes I will sprinkle some paprika just for color. Enjoy!

You know what @CarolDM, I had not thought of paprika, but I have definitely heard of it and have seen some sprinkled on. I am going to sprinkle some on now that you mention it.

@andriaperry I love paprika's flavor. And this should go well with the potato salad for sure.

@Hannihar My recipe is in the picture. Miracle Whip, onions, pickle relish, mustard, salt and pepper, oregano...and a few other things. I was trying to be sneaky by sharing my recipe in the picture rather than the text of my post. So far my post has not been pulled, so I think I got away with it.

Oh man, that sort of MAKES the whole salad zing. Without it it might still be good, but not nearly as good.

@MommyOfEli2013 That being said, most potato salad recipes call for relish and even onions, and many of the store bought varieties have both in them as well.

@porwest I can understand that....but I just would not be able to add them myself! Maybe onion powder lol not sure about the relish...how to sub that

It is a whole lot cheaper to not eat out. I made a Japanese style potato salad the other night . . . mayo and rice vinegar - with potato, carrots, cucumber, onions, and ham.

@porwest If you've ever had it at a Japanese restaurant (or possibly even on a Hawaiian food plate), it's a little different than the classic potato salad. I think it's the rice vinegar that does it - and maybe the little crunchy bits from the cucumber and onions.

Never heard of a Japanese style potato salad, but from what you described it sounds tasty. Might have to look that one up.

@much2say I hardly ever eat at Japanese restaurants (not sure why since I love Chinese and the food is similar). But it does sound good.

@Tampa_girl7 Oh man. That would irk me. But then I am on a salt restriction and it limits me from a LOT of things I really like, so I have to be careful. But I DO love potato salad.

Sometimes we do this instead of eating out. We spend a bit more on the meat for the main dish and have a slap-up meal at home.

@porwest We still go out from time to time but at home, you can both have a drink as no-one has to drive and it's usually much more comfortable.

@JudyEv That's kind of how I looked at it. We spent far more time, and the food was frankly better. We had a good time. Not that we would not have had a good time at a restaurant, but we had a better time at home.

Even if you spend a little more on the meat, it usually still works out to be cheaper than going out. Not that going out isn't nice from time to time. But this time this just made more sense.

Yeah, we actually spent far more time together. They came over around 4pm and did not leave until about 10pm. We'd never have sat in a restaurant that long. Had good food, good drink, good conversation, good relaxation time, and saved good money...so all in all I call it a win.

Food cooked at home, at least to me, always tastes better. But I am probably biased toward my own cooking. But yes...it DOES save a ton of money as well. A metric butt ton actually.

I have never considered Miracle Whip to necessarily be sweet. The word that comes to mind more than that is zesty. I have never been a fan of real mayonnaise which is why I prefer this over that. My aunt makes a potato salad with real mayonnaise and I find it to be rather bland and tasteless.
