Never a dull moment

Now that summer is just around the bend here in Western Australia and the weather is warming up, the various reptiles that have been hidden away during the winter are starting to appear. The most common of these is the skink or lizard which we see quite often. They are very timid but occasionally we see them sunning themselves on the window-sill or basking on the paths. They grow to about a foot (30 cm) or more in length. We’ve never had one inside but yesterday Vince thought he saw a little tail disappearing under the fridge. If there is a skink in the house, getting him out will be a very interesting exercise. But we thought we’d have a try while we knew where he was. What you see in the photo is the way I blocked him from going under the stove. We had a piece of plyboard cutting off the kitchen from the open-area dining/lounge. I was standing by with a bucket to plonk over him and Vince man-handled the fridge out of its recess. Nothing! There doesn’t seem to be anywhere under the fridge for him to hide so perhaps Vince was seeing things. It wouldn’t be the first time. haha The photo is of two baby skinks we uncovered near our wood supply some years ago.
I just saved a life. I was sweeping the side verandah as the leaves have been blowing in and we have guests arriving tomorrow. I glanced in a bin that is...

Roomie saw a snake on the porch today. Instead of attempting to move it with something though he just stepped over it.

I would never 'just step over' a snake. I guess he knew it was harmless.

@snowy22315 I wouldn't necessarily want to harm it but I'd be worried about it turning on me if I stepped over it. I wouldn't do that to any of our snakes.

Interesting looking critters. We have some salamanders near here. Mostly they stay near ponds and such. I've not seen any around my house.

We hear these in the ceilings from time to time. They grow quite big. This one liked the heat on the windowsill.

@cperry2 Yes, that's true. It's just the snakes you need to worry about.

@JudyEv I assume like most lizards/skinks/newts, they are relatively harmless? (Else you would be pretty upset by their presence/)

. We see lizards and geckos in Florida, but never in the condo. I guess it’s a perk of being on the third floor.

They'd find it hard to get to the third floor. I can't imagine how this one sneaked in.

I think that lizard is what we call bubuli which is friendly because it doesn't harm humans.

It was probably hanging on to the underside of the fridge. It's probably curled up in one of your slippers right now!

@WorDazza Luckily I didn't squash this frog but it's hard to get your foot out quickly when you're panicking.

We did think of that but we couldn't see it. It's outside now. What's worse than finding a skink in your slipper? It's a frog in your rubber boot - when your foot is half in! And I know this from experience. This happened quite regularly but always scared me witless - not that that's hard to do.

sure don't 'nvy ya the 'hunt' fer such. the resident cat used to bring the lizards here 'ndoors unharmed fer a 'cookie', turn 'em loose'n 't times i 'twas unsuccessful fer several days tryin' to capture such to return to the great outdoors. so glad none'f ours get that large, lol. i reckon they might be easier to catch though when full grown?
