Childhood memories and a can of soup.

One of my warm and snuggly memories from childhood days involves lentil soup. Every Sunday, while dad and I watched football (American), my step-mom would make lentil soup. She used a ham bone as a base and made it from scratch. The whole house would smell of lentil soup, and to this day, it's the best lentil soup I've had. Recently, I've been searching for satisfying canned soups, anticipating Winter and some cooler months. Progresso's "Lite" broccolil and cheddar was an abject failure--much too sweet. But their basic lentil soup (I had it last night with a Safeway broiled whole chicken) isn't that bad. It was a bit bland, relative to what my step-mother used to make, but it wasn't offensive in any way. I added only olive oil, salt, pepper and a sliced garlic clove to "make it my own." So I guess I have two posts going on here at once. Have you had any new culinary/gustatory successes (or abject failures) recently? And do you have certain childhood memories that make you feel warm and snuggly (and safe)?

You poor thing! That progresso is the nastiest tasting lentil soup! I tried and I have found not one brand of lentil soup fit to eat. I make lentil soup, the house smells fabulous and its ( the soup) filled with vegetables and spices. Memory......Potato wedges, mom used to buy them at the new deli and they were so good!

I love those warm memories. No, Progresso is not totally winning over my heart at this point. My "go to" canned soup is still Andersen's split pea soup. Do you smile when you think of your potato wedges?

@andriaperry I like Progresso Lentil Soup probably because I've never had any homemade. I wish I could taste yours!

I've had the Progresso brand lentil soup. It's not bad and great and Lentils are an excellent source of B vitamins, iron, and fiber.

Glad I'm being healthy. I'm cooking some more up now. This time I added olive oil, fresh lemon, garlic, chicken, salt and pepper. We'll see how it tastes.

During the cold winter the smell I remember in the evening was a rich Minestrone, my father liked to add cooked rice. I liked even more the leftover, blended and served with garlic croutons.

What kinds of things go with dumplings? Are they soft or hard? I forget!

@TheHorse We used to put them on top of a stew on the top of the stove. The stew needs to be quite liquid as once the dumplings go in, you can't lift the lid for 20 minutes while the dumplings cook and rise. They a soft, doughy substance perhaps a bit like what you call 'biscuits'.

My mom makes the best lumpiang shanghai or Filipino spring rolls. It consists of ground pork along with carrots and other veggies.

I think I would enjoy the spring rolls. What kind of sauces are "on the side"? Sometimes I get Thai spring rolls--I just "need" them.

I guess my best snuggly childhood food memory has to do with having chicken pox followed immediately by the mumps. The doctor said to feed me anything I wanted. I had tomato soup, and grape juice for a few days. I have lots of great childhood memories of spending time along side my dad doing stuff, too. I made an interesting cold salad for my lunch the other day. I had "pickled" hard boiled eggs in beet juice and vinegar. I chopped a couple, shredded some turkey and added some marinated cucumber and onion chunks. Dressed it all with sour cream, a little salt and pepper. Really good high protein salad.

Sounds interesting and good (not the chicken pox and mumps)! I like "revising" what I put in my salads.

@Raelove Oh, that sounds wonderful! One thing I do is buy really sweet ice cream and bathe it in milk. The ice cream/milk "border" becomes like snow with wonderful flavors.

I like to doctor up a lot of pre made foods. Homemade soup is always better, but some of the canned ones aren't too bad.

My gluten free brownies turned out pretty well today. We would visit my grandparents in NC (just down the road from where we now live) and she made the best chicken and pastry (that's chicken and dumplins to some). I finally learned how to make it, but still not like her's.

In those hard up days, my mother would give my brother 50 cents to buy a can of Libby's corned beef. She would put a lot of cabbage to fit as the meal for a family of 7.

I eat Progresso Lentil Soup all the time! I'm very limited on what I can "cook" these days. My husband has taken over most of the cooking and food shopping; so there haven't been any real successes or failures. As far as any food type memories...my mother was a terrible cook (except for spaghetti sauce and gnocchi). She was a fantastic baker; and I remember making dozens and dozens of cookies at Christmas time.

In Italy, when I was young, we cooked with wood and had an oven. I remember when my mom would bake bread in an oven and always made one little bread for me in the shape pf a person.

My childhood memories of "canned soup" are Campbell's Soup. I even liked their commercials. I didn't start eating Progresso soup until I got married. I think one day in the grocery store they had a sale so I tried them. They are really good canned soups. But as far as homemade soups? My mother often made lima bean soup with ham hocks or smoked neckbones. It was delicious. My husband liked to make split pea soup from scratch.

When I do buy soup it is usually the Campbells brand. But I dont buy it too often. Favorite memory is my grandmothers homemade noodles. Thankfully that is one thing I paid attention to when she was doing it. Mine are close, not hers but close.
