And Yet Another Dollar Wasted

So, I am at it again with this darned lottery. This time the Lucky Day, which is a daily drawing here in Illinois that happens twice a day. The jackpot is $650,000, which after taxes will amount to somewhere around $390,000. That's a real rough estimate. Speaking of estimations, I will probably lose my dollar, and I will likely make more from this stupid post than I will from this lottery ticket. But I just cannot resist the urge. Wish me luck. Not enough to retire, but I have had a certain truck on my eye for awhile, and worst case scenario I get to at least have that. Not that I cannot afford it now with what I have...I just don't want to spend the money. Do you ever play the lottery?

Every once in a while, I will get a ticket or two. I wish, I could say, I have one, but, I have not. The most I ever got was the cost of the ticket.

Most of the time that's all I get as well. Incidentally I did win $15 in the Lucky Day yesterday.

@porwest That's better than nothing. I only ever end up playing once every few months.

@whiteream I play almost religiously. Obviously it's mostly for the fun. As you can see I have not hit the big one yet.

Well, if you win, it's a dollar well spent. If you don't win, you at least had a chance at it . . . and that's a higher chance than someone like me who hasn't played in years!

No I don't buy lottery tickets, the odds against winning are too high. What amazes me about lotteries in your country is tha amount taken in taxes. Our lottery winners get the whole sum.

@porwest I agree, you've got to be in it to win it.

I agree the odds are horrible. But the thing I look at is...it's a BUCK. How often do we waste a dollar or two on something worthless? Granted. A lottery ticket is also mostly worthless. BUT, if you have the chance at millions? I'll take that chance all day, twice on Sunday. As for the taxes, they suck. BUT, let's say I win the current MegaMillions which is worth $127 million as of this writing. If I take the lump sum I lose about half, so it's $63.5 million before taxes. They take roughly 40% of that in taxes and I collect $38.1 million when all is said and done. Not a bad return for a $2 investment. I will take my chances all day long on that even if I will probably never win a single dime. One guaranteed way to never win is to never play.

@porwest You express my sentiments exactly. And I do play the lottery every so often. As you say, someone has to win!

You know it. The thing is, it's only a couple of dollars. What's the harm. And somebody HAS to win. It most certainly will not be me if I don't have a ticket in my hand, and I can think of enough stuff I might waste a couple of bucks on that have no chance whatsoever of any kind of return.

Betting on the lottery is giving hope to yourself. I bet only when I have extra money which is seldom.
