when it comes to selling or business

years ago, a cousin was selling bras from a catalogue as a sideline. i offered to help by showing the brochure to my officemates and take orders. when she showed me the pricelist and explained how the markups worked, i started to get confused. it's always hard for me to keep track of those. "can we do it this way?" i asked. "i'll just show them one pricelist and you just give me my share of the profit." that setup was much easier for me. every time she reports i've earned X amount from X number of orders, i would order a bra from the catalogue for my sister and use my sales commission to pay for it. would you do the same setup?

I am not into sales ever since but with the suggested markup, I guess you have to learn that.

i was never good at selling nor business, either, but i just wanted to help since i had an office job with regular salary while she didn't at that time. i just trusted her computation and used whatever amount i earned to buy what my sister needs. so it's a win-win for me because i never shelled out any money.

@Alexandoy exactly. no cash out for me and all 3 of us benefited from that setup.

@hereandthere it is like your earnings are what you used to buy the needs of your sister.

The only people who really make any money selling this stuff are the companies behind the products. I have known many people to do it, including my mom, and it's really a pipe dream to think anyone is going to actually make a living doing it. What grates me is when one of these people say, "I have my own business." Umm. No. You don't. You own nothing, have no say in what products you sell or at what price, and you can make no decisions about your "business" that are not dictated by the company you are "representing." You can't sell shares of stock and you can't apply for a FEIN and employ people, establish an S corp., or any of that sort of thing. What one is, essentially, is an independent contractor in what is basically a multi-level marketing scheme.

yes, i wasn't that concerned about how accurate her computation was about profite sharing. my goal was just to help since i had an office job with a regular salary while she didn't.

@LadyDuck exactly. some people give different prices to different people, especially if they want to buy more and ask for a discount or if they want to be resellers. but it's hard for me to keep track of those. i can only remember one fixed price.

@hereandthere I did something like that for a friend who sold cosmetics and I did the same. I told her, you will give me what you judge is my due, I do not want to make calculations.

Your way definitely sounds easier. I hate math, so a simpler pricelist would work for me .

It would be confusing if she have different pricelist. And good you came up with a decision.

It’s okay with me, but normally I buy my commission and sell them with different price.

I would do the same set up too. Most catalogue prices are 25 off. So the seller gets 25 percent she can spread over her and her co agents.
