Our one and only cruise - but what a cruise

Early in 2013, we were lucky enough to have a cruise on the Queen Mary 2. We never entertained the idea of sailing on such a luxurious ship. However, it was Chinese New Year and many passengers were getting off in Hong Kong. The company was offering some very good deals, trying to fill cabins. Our friends saw the offer and put our names down. We had 48 hours to decide if we wanted to go.
We flew to Singapore to meet with friends for a day then went to Hong Kong where we boarded the ship. It then sailed to Shanghai before going back to Yorkey's Knob near Cairns. We docked again at Brisbane where many people got off and we disembarked at Sydney.
Our cabin was very nice although we didn't have a butler like the flash end of the ship. There were shows or concerts every night and plenty of activities planned through the day.
It was probably an 'old person's' ship but there were several different dance venues each evening and some excellent musicians performing in small groups in the bars and dining areas. The food was sumptuous and beautifully served.
Pictured is the bust of Queen Mary which was one of the many beautiful artworks.

It must have been thrilling. I saw something on TV onetime that some people actually live on the ship, and call it home. They pay maybe 5,000 a month and just stay on board all the time. Pretty steep, but if you can afford it..why not?

@snowy22315 True but they have doctors and a hospital. Not good if you have a chronic condition.

That's true. One woman's husband had been an engineer on the ship until he passed away. She got a good rate and just stayed on board. Each trip you do gets cheaper and it's cheaper longterm. You have no expenses really other than your drinks - and your personal laundry if you get them to do it but there are laundries on board. I think it would be worth looking into if you could afford it.

How long was the journey? I was never on a cruise ship. I don't know if I would want to, as I feel more comfortable on land.

@rappeter13 We had a Force 9 gale one day with huge swells and some people were ill that day but mostly there was no movement at all.

@Bensen32 We had a Force 9 gale and winds around 100 kph and a swell of eight metres while we were on board. We weren't allowed on our balconies but inside the ship there was just the slightest roll. It was pretty exciting to watch the sea through the windows.and see it splash on the glass.

I've been on a few cruises but never on a Cunard ship. The QM2 looks fabulous and I would love to have that experience. I love fine dining and I think the Cunard ships have the finest from the reviews I've read.
Lucky you!

I'm really pleased we got the chance to do it. We would never have considered it except that the price was affordable at the time. This is one of the dining areas.

That is so cool. I got to tour the QE when she was docked in San Diego CA. Cruises are a blast, but on the QE2 would be amazing!!!
