An oyster is a salt-water bivalve mollusk. Some types can be eaten raw or cooked. Cultured pearls are produced in pearl oysters by usually placing a bit of polished mussel shell inside the oyster. A pearl is produced in 3-7 years. Windowpane oysters are prized for their translucent shells which are used to make a variety of decorative items. Middens (old dumps) show that oysters were an important food source as much as 10,000 years ago. Oysters have been cultivated in Japan since at least 2,000 B.C. In the United States in the early 19th century, oysters were cheap and eaten by the middle class. As supplies diminished in the early 20th centuries, prices rose; and oysters were considered an expensive delicacy. Oysters can be eaten on the half shell raw, smoked, boiled, baked, fried, roasted, stewed, canned, pickled, steamed, broiled or used in a variety of drinks. Photo Credit: Pixabay

My husband loves the small French oysters. The American oysters are too big.

Everybody always talks about how good oysters are. But I can only think of two times I have had time. One time my mother put them in stuffing. The taste was buried in the flavor of the stuffing. One of my brothers fried them. They were quite tasty!

I used to love eating oysters and other seafood as well. But now I don't get to enjoy any of it because hubby doesn't. Out of respect for him I gave that up. And pork as well, which I loved.

@LindaOHio Yeah. That's a lot of goodies to give up for someone. Would be nice if hubby gave up vaping for me. Never gonna happen.

My husband loves raw oysters, particularly those from France. I like only fried oyster or oven baked oysters with a sauce on top.

I've had very tasty oyster dishes and some that had a lemon flavor- made me wonder if the oysters were good.

I love oysters on the half shell. My favorite was Oyters Rockefeller in New Orleans. Fried oysters are awesome, too.

My ex and I went up to Newport, RI many years ago for a romantic Valentine's Day weekend. We had dinner at the resort and the appetizer was oysters on the half shell. I neither loved nor hated them. I'm a much bigger fan of clams.

my grandma, soaked this in vinegar with pepper and onion. She loved it. then one time, out of curiosity, I ate it. I wanted to puke. I use oyster sauce very often. Am.still wondering about cooked oyster's taste.
