No Classes This Fall Semester

United States
July 14, 2020 11:49am CST
My granddaughter just finished her first year of college. Well the first semester she was away at the university and of course was home doing online learning for the second semester like everyone else. Within a week she had gotten her letter and dorm information for the Fall semester which she was excited about and then was informed that they decided not to open for the Fall. Needless to say she's quite disappointed but I guess it's smart not to open the campus while the virus is still all around. No word yet on what's happening here with our elementary and high schools. Speculation is that they won't open or they'll have half days. Should be interesting to see which direction they choose. I know it's going to be very hard for parents if they have to continue online learning with their children for another semester. But I'd rather see everyone safe especially with all the recent surges of Covid. Any news about school reopening in your area?

Our district has decided to do all online learning this fall - for us personally that means elementary and high school. Although I am not a fan of online learning, I am totally agreeable to doing whatever it take to keep everyone safe . . . my kids, students, teachers, their families, the whole community. I think our local colleges and universities will also be doing the same.

I think it's going to go state by state about which schools will be opening and all the hows that go with it. I agree that it's better to be safe by staying home and doing online learning. I'm sure not only schools but I think many people who have been working from home will continue to do so for who knows how long.

@Marilynda1225 Here, not all counties are on the same page. One county down south of us says they will be reopening in the fall like normal . . . masks are not necessary and they won't be social distancing . Some people are actually all for it and others are so against it as you can imagine. I fear for all those areas that will be not be taking those precautions. I think working from home is best too if possible, but unfortunately not all can do that.

If the number of cases is still important it was a good decision not to open the campus. For the moment the local decision is to open the schools in September, but it is still not sure.

I haven't heard anything yet, but for single working mom's it is going to be a disaster if the have to homeschool. With noone to watch the kids they can't work

It's definitely hard for those parents who have to figure out a way to have their kids be home, doing online learning and worrying about their babysitting needs. This virus has just caused a big mess. Unfortunately I think it's not going to end anytime soon.

We're all on summer break here so it's been the big topic if the schools will reopen in Sept. Guess some schools will and some won't depending on how bad the virus is in those areas.

It's affecting everyone around the world. At least online learning is possible so our children aren't going without any education. It's probably harder for those parents who have to help younger children with their learning but it's better to be safe these days.

I'm not sure about our area. I had heard that two areas in San Fran and I think one another place decided "To heck with you we're staying closed!" which I think is a good idea.

I guess it's pretty much depending on how bad the virus is in the state/county you live in. Schools are making individual decisions it seems.

I think that that is a very wise decision to keep the colleges closed. In our area it is the 18-24 year olds that are getting and spreading the virus at alarming rates. Even if you do not want to attend parties with masses of people, even living in a dorm and sitting in a lecture hall with many others will leave you worrying if you came in contact with the virus. Covid is not gone, and we need to remember that in all that we do. Remind your granddaughter that her, and others her age are making history and will be stronger for rising to the occasion of showing their resilience.

I agree that it's so easy for the virus to spread like wildfire on a collage campus especially in dorm rooms.I'll have to remind her that she's making history and will have some good stories to tell her grandchildren some day.

Maybe it's for the best. I do understand her disappointment, but it's better to be safe. For the moment, schools will be reopening in September. My kids' school will be taking precautions and such. For the moment, it looks like they'll be going to school.

There's talk about opening the schools back up here, but I don't know if a decision has been made yet.
