Do you like my ears?

We visited my sister last weekend and I was able to get my goat fix again. My nephew is now milking 28 goats. About half are Saanens and the rest Nigerian dwarf goats. His milking machine milks two at a time but it is still quite a long process. He has sold some and is trying to sell more. Each doe usually has two or three kids and some have four so the numbers explode every kidding season. I liked this little fellow with his mottled ears. And can you see that the pupil of the eye is rectangular, rather than circular? I read about that once so now I check out each goat to see if they’re all the same. They do seem to be.

@judyev I did not know that about goats. What happens to the little boy goats when they’re born? I hope the answer isn’t too indelicate.

The very best of the little boy goats go off to have harems of their own. The not so good are made into wethers (I'm sure you can work that out) and sold as pets.

@JudyEv You mean the not so good ones are no longer proper boys? Poor things.

@xFiacre Yes, that's right. Proper boys get very smelly.

@JudyEv This is what I found researching: Goats are herbivores, and need to be able to protect themselves when a predator comes along. A broad line of sight, aided by wide, rectangular-shaped pupils, allows them to see danger approaching from their peripheral vision.

I will research it one day. I'm keen to know if there is a reason for it.

@LadyDuck Thanks for that. I read that goats, sheep, octopuses and toads have rectangular pupils but it didn't really say why.

I didn't notice anything unusual in him unless I read the post. Rectangular pupil... I was not aware of it. When I see it again, I feel I might have seen it in another goats and failed to notice. My grandma had two goats and I consumed their milk. Don't remember about their pupil though.

That rectangle is expressing its love for you. When you turn your back, they are back to circular perhaps. LOL. Kidding. I think it is interesting. So wider vision perhaps.

yes their pupils are different, i have no idea why. We have goats here too, just walking around, our neighbors own them. The small ones are so cute, but they're wary of people.

That's just the ones he is milking. There are probably twice that many little ones being bottle-fed although they drink eight at a time from a feeding bucket rather than from bottles.

@JudyEv Perfectly normal. Animals like horses, goats, and impala spend most of their time grazing, and need to be able to be aware of the presence of predators all around them, especially while their head is down near the ground during grazing.
