Hellos and Goodbyes

I don’t know about you. But I always answer the phone with a hello and end my conversation with a goodbye, unless I slam the phone down (more likely click off) if it’s a spam call. I noticed while watching TV or movies, most people end the calls without saying goodbye. Am I old school? What do you do?

Always, I answer the phone call, 'HELLO' When the call has ended I say, 'Bye, I love you!' Hoping for a 'I love you too, Mom.' Other people I say, 'Thanks for calling or it was nice talking with you, I enjoyed it!'

Those are all nice ways to end a call. I only tell my family I love you and they say it back.

@DianneN One day my daughter didn't say this. She calls back two seconds later, 'Mom, I forgot to say, I love you!'

Yep, I say hello and goodbye....unless it’s my brother, then I say, “Yo, Bro!” Or if it’s a telemarketer, then I’ll answer, “FBI Phone Scam Investigation Department.”

@DianneN — please don’t say that. I’m a registered Republican and I don’t want the FBI showing up.

That is proper manners . I noticed that about movies/shows too. But I thought maybe they just don't put it in the script because we know it's goodbye . . . trimming that dialogue would put the time to better use. Kinda like how you never see the actors ripping open a wrapped gift (they just open a box lid).

So true, but the we all know who watches those movies and uses them as life's learning.. The unwrapped box! Happy you were raised with manners!

Now let me recall. What do I say at the end of the call? I think it is different with different people. Mostly it will be - it was nice talking to you.

If it is a number that I do not know I hand the phone to my husband to have some fun with. He will tell the person at the other end that he does not speak English do they speak Russian. When they get mad and hang up he just laughs.

It's common courtesy to say hello and goodbye. Even if I say, Talk soon, I still feel compelled to say goodbye.

I don't always end a call with goodbye, sometimes I end with see ya or later or take care, it depends. I wondered about that too though, why just hang up without an ending.

Most of the time we say hello and goodbye to end the call. If a family member is calling, I answer it with, "Yee?" In a nice way.

my father used to answer the phone "Joe's bar and grill." Personally, i still do the greeting (normally this is Scott), and a goodbye (thanks talk to you soon professionally or goodbye personal!)

I never give my name away to unknown callers. No need to to friends or family. No matter how I end the call - I love you, talk soon, etc., I still feel compelled to say goodbye.
