Introducing my ice-maker

MyLotter Jim Bauer (@porwest) wrote recently about his ice-maker. You can catch up here: https://www.mylot.com/post/3424923/saved-109-today. He expressed an interest in my ice-maker so here is a very grainy photo of it. It is a Tupperware product and I’ve had it for years. The three trays are divided into eight segments. When the water has frozen, each tray can be twisted to loosen the ice-blocks. The tray then fits upside down over the top of the brown container and the ice-blocks fall out. The container holds at least 48 ice-blocks. If I’m expecting a run on ice, I store more in some other container. As I’ve said I’ve had it for years and find it works very well for me.

We have a much bigger ice maker than that. It's called our back garden.

@JudyEv It would have to be a very small one!! At the time of typing it was covered in about 2 inches of snow. It's gone now though.

Living in a tropical climate where most of the year feels like living at the threshold of Hell's door, ice is a valuable commodity. I have an automatic ice maker built into my refrigerator, but I also keep blocks of ice frozen in my freezer. Although we're having a very cold winter at the moment, ice is pretty much a daily necessity for life here in Florida. I love that your ice blocks are pie-shaped.

@JudyEv What's wrong Judy, you can't handle a little heat?

I can imagine that many would use a lot more ice than we ever would. I don't think living in Florida would suit me.

@moffittjc A LITTLE heat maybe - but not a whole lot of heat - not to mention humidity.

I now buy plastic bags divided in many small "cubes", I freeze the bags full of water and I "cut" only the cubes I need.

We have a metal one in the caravan and I've cut my hand on that once or twice. It's pretty lethal.

@crazyhorseladycx Mine had such sharp edges and needed a bit of muscle to free the blocks, then of course, it only needed a small slip and next you knew, you were bleeding.

a run on ice made me laugh! Its funny in the day's of automated ice makers we forget that we used to have to fill the trays. (hey who didn't fill the ice trays?)

@JudyEv we had to turn ours off (it has an outside unit to get ice and not open the frig). my dog is really smart. He loves ice. He learned he could get ice without humans involved. The floor was wet from half eaten ice!

@Tampa_girl7 We don't use a lot. I guess maybe it's not hot enough often enough. We don't drink soft drinks and prefer tap water to ice-cold water.

@JudyEv No. Not automatic. Yes. But I like that it is stackable. Not that regular ice trays are not. But it's roundness also gives it a lower profile, so it takes up less space and still gets the job done. I like it.
