Have you ever interacted with someone creepy on the internet?

I feel like this is a question that's long overdue. We (well the majority of us) have been online for at least a few decades. Some of us might have started out with the different chat rooms and messaging boards before we migrated to online earning platforms. I know I've ran into a few people across the internet that gave me the creeps and probably a few that I didn't realize I should think were creepy. I'm thinking about when I first started out as a preteen on the internet. Now there's reddit and for those unfamiliar with that name, it's "the front page of the internet" or, as I like to call it, a den for lots of pretentious, difficult, creepy and dangerous things. Not all of reddit is bad, but you have to be careful or You'll stumble into a rabbit hole where not even eye bleach is going to save you. So... Has there ever been someone online you wish you could go back and NOT talk to?

If I stayed away from every site populated with weirdos I wouldn't be here

This is true, though I like to think the oddities here are tame in comparison to other sites I've been a part of.

@WorDazza Most of the odd ones are endearing. Occasionally we get a few odd ones that are annoying, but those people never seem to stay long.

@ScribbledAdNauseum I prefer to think of the oddities on here as endearing.

I am glad too! I've talked to some really strange people over the years. I once talked to a man who I'm convinced was a sociopath.

@Tina30219 Yeah it was something else. I saw a question on reddit today asking about the likelihood that someone has communicated with a murderer on reddit, it made me think of the question I asked here.

Yes, on myLot, when I first got here... Someone apparently thought I sounded catch-worthy and she went after me... Scared the crap out of me. She got my address, phone number and full name. She started calling my home phone and sending letters/cards. Then started talking about coming to see/meet me. I've never been so terrified in my life! I reported her for stalking me, blocked her name/address at my Post Office and cancelled my home phone. I was scared to even talk on myLot for a while. I just kept avoiding her any time she tried to talk to me here. It finally worked. (I even told Alex (GoAskAlice) what was going on and showed him the stuff she sent me via pms here. It wasn't pretty!) I did tell you I wasn't the creepy person you needed to avoid. Edit to add: There is one person on myLot that I know you should avoid.

That is a terrifying experience. I'm not sure that I would have come back to mylot after that. I really hope that person got the help they needed because it sounds like they needed help. It reminds me of a situation I came across on reddit a few years ago. This young woman would ask advice about dating on several different forums. In some of the questions it seemed clear to most that she was not mentally stable enough to have a relationship. I can't remember all of the details, but it seemed to me that she had a tendency to stalk men. She also seemed to have very low self esteem issues at the same time. I probably know who I should avoid. I have a pretty good sense of people here, but I'm also sure that the person you're referring to is someone I cautiously interact with. I usually feed him a lot of BS.

@DaddyEvil I've interacted with him a little, but not a lot. I don't think I realized he was a psychologist, but I know he works with children. I wonder if I've communicated with this woman before, I'm racking my brain and trying to decide if I've ever talked to someone who claimed they were.

@ScribbledAdNauseum I still see her here once in a while. She claims to be a psychiatrist/psychologist (I can't remember which.) so I asked pony what he thought about her. (I know he's a psychologist.) He also thought she was somewhat weird and wasn't sure she wasn't lying about what she did for a living. (You do know who pony (TheHorse) is, right? If you don't interact with him, you should check him out. He can really be funny!)

I have interacted with creepy people on myLot and Facebook among others. I have met creepy people in my neighborhood. There was a guy that really creeped me out here and I was so glad when he left to go up north somewhere. He gave me cold shivers when he was near.

Oh no! I've only lived by someone creepy once in my life and I am very thankful for that. There have been some strange people here on mylot but no one I can think of as creepy.

Nothing too serious except for the friend requests sent by some guys who all look the same- bushy eyebrows, beady eyes, thick beards, lots of facial hair

I get those requests too. A friend's mother was recently scammed by a man who was trying to get her to give him money. It's sad because she wanted to believe him so badly.

@sol_cee She has not, but she did ask her mom to be careful. Her mother has a good heart and wants to see the good in everyone.

I've done the same and sometimes I've just walked away. I was reading a question on reddit that made me think of this one. Sometimes you have to just feel things out, because occasionally the person on the other side of the screen is just crying out for help.

@CarolDM Very true. The mind is a very complicated place and honestly the most cheerful person can be hiding behind a world of depression.

Oh yes as I have spent many years online and have came across many people. I have come across a few creepy ones and even felt like they were stalking and bullying me online. Was so glad to finally get rid of them with whatever it took to do so.

@ScribbledAdNauseum Yeah. thanks. I was a bit naive at first and didn't know much about the internet and a couple of people were friendly at first and we used to email one another about this and that but then they became creepy and I had a hard time getting rid of them and stopping them from emailing me anymore. It is so much more scarier these days.

@stephcjh I feel like there is a lot more information out there, including information about very strange things. It opens the world and the internet to some cringe worthy instances sometimes.

Many years ago I was new to the internet and I chatted with many different people. One person really surprised me, but not in a positive way. I was having a normal conversation with him for a long time and all of a sudden he wrote a really offensive comment and left the chatroom. It wouldn't have surprised me if it had happened in the begining of the conversation, but this guy didn't seem like that at all and most of our conversation wasn't the least bit creepy.

@ScribbledAdNauseum Yes, that is my impression too. He left the chatsite right after he wrote the last comment, and of course I avoided that username after that time.

@Porcospino I know some people (even here on mylot) will leave and then come back under a new username. I hope he was embarrassed for his behavior and that he never did it again.

I think that's the safest and best way to go. I've seen situations on reddit where people have asked other members of the site for advice on a situation involving one of the members. A few years ago there was a girl (the general consensus was that she was between 15-20) who seemed to be crying out for help from other members, but she also did a lot of trolling. The members of the law subreddit were asked their opinion on what to do because the young girl posted pictures of what looked like abuse.

@LadyDuck Going to the local police might not do much here. They would probably tell us to contact the police in the state that the woman is posting from. An entire subreddit was dedicated to the individual I am talking about. I actually remembered more about her after talking about it here. She presented as a young girl, maybe a fifteen to twenty year old and she was always popping up and asking about relationship advice. It advanced into showing pictures of cut arms and there was something she said to another user that sent up a red flag. The community believed the girl might have been off of behavior medication.

@ScribbledAdNauseum Should I see someone posting pictures for what I thought it was abuse, I would send the pictures to the local police and they would take action. I wonder if someone did. A woman in Italy saved a girl two weeks ago sending the pictures to the police.

@ScribbledAdNauseum There were certainly such people, although I can't clearly remember my beginning on the Internet, I'm mostly online because I work and when I work I don't have time to chat, I neglected a lot of social platforms because I don't achieve, I'm mostly where I like the most. So I honestly don't know what kind of weirdos there are nowadays..and there are, I don't worry that there aren't any. As for the mentioned site, I never liked it, although I know it, I have the impression that the sects took over the site there because something like that 'normal' common sense man can't write, post, etc.

The internet was a large part of my socialization when I was a preteen, even with local friends. Over the years I've used it more and more for information and less for interacting with people. Mylot is the exception of course. There are some subreddits with pleasant people, but I feel as if a lot of people there are college aged or professionals.

@ScribbledAdNauseum On the Internet, everyone is 'highly educated' I don't think that way about people ... so I look at fb, there are more 'green beans' than educated people, I would say

I've met a lot of people like that on social media, and I chose to block them, but there is someone who is very strange, he messages, all my friends on Facebook asking about me, and he always creates new accounts to contact me again
