Does anyone here do cryptic crosswords?

The photo has nothing to do with the discussion. The question for today is: Does anyone myLot member do cryptic crosswords? I was introduced to these by my mother and, over time and with practice, have got to the point where I can actually get out most of the puzzle which appears in our daily newspaper. I do 'ordinary' crosswords as well. With cryptics, once you hit on the answer you realise it couldn't be anything other than what it is whereas with a normal crossword, the solution could be any one of a number of words. We don’t get the newspaper but a friend collects the puzzles and when we get together, we work on them together. As the name suggests the puzzles are very, well, cryptic but it’s a lot of fun to try to puzzle out the answers and very satisfying when you do. So, at the risk of repeating myself: Does anyone do cryptic crosswords?

I love doing regular crossword puzzles but have never heard of cryptic crossword puzzles. I'll have to check into finding some of them and see if I like them or not.

@JudyEv I play words with friends everyday. I am not sure how much I like it though. It is just kind of like a habit now.

That's a great game too. I always have a book of them in the car. I do them if I have to wait for Vince. That way I don't get so impatient.

@JudyEv A most deeply satisfying experience when you get it right, frustrating when you don't. I usually do then just when on holiday when I try to complete the cryptic one in the Irish Independent.

@JudyEv Yes, you get to know a compiler’s style and then it’s easier.

Some can be really difficult but the one compiler seems to create the ones in our daily and you get used to how they create the clues.

I haven't done a crossword in years. I was probably in my early 20s the last time. I did much prefer the cryptic variety back then.

I have never heard of cryptic crosswords, sounds a lot more complicated than regular crossword puzzles. Crossword puzzles are complicated enough for me

I suppose they are a bit more complicated but it's easy to know when you have a clue correct.

I have tried a few of those over the years but I was never very good at it. I could get some of the answers and words right but never the whole thing. Some of the words or answers I had never heard of so no wonder I could not get it lol. They are fun to try though.

It was a very long time before I got a complete puzzle out but if I worked on it with my friend we could often get them out.

@JudyEv I do the Italian ones and the French ones, because I have so much the habit to speak French, I would not even try in English.

@LadyDuck It would be very difficult if the puzzle was not in your native language.
