If it is a long phone call.

Phones are means of communication and it is now a days smart phones/ mobile phones which people often use, instead of old land line phones. There are some callers, when they call you they speak to the point and would finish the call once they have discussed the necessary thing. However, there are others, who believe in long phone calls. One of my cousins and one of my close friends fall in the second category. If I receive a call from either of the two, I should be prepared that it is going to be a long call (I put on my earphones, as soon as they call). Besides, asking about our well being, they both believe in giving graphic details of every event/incident which has happened with them in recent past. At times, it gets difficult to spare time for these category of people and you tell them plainly that you have other things to attend to. Do you receive long calls from your friends/ relatives and while receiving long calls, when the caller keeps on talking, do you feel irritated and how do you tackle such situations?

I do not like to spend a lot of time on phone. I have a cousin who tends to talk too much, but I cut her if the call becomes too long.

@LadyDuck - It is good to hear that you do not spend much time on phone. When your cousin calls and she goes on and on, how do you cut short the conversation? Do you tell her plainly that call is getting longer and you have other things to attend?

Yes, my sister won't let me get off a call with her, even though she tells me the same thing three or four times. So now, I don't answer her calls. After she hangs up I send her a text message. When she starts repeating herself, I just ignore her texts. It's not nice, but neither is repeating the same things again and again.

Your sister needs a listener and who could be a better listener than you? There are many people who tend to repeat the same thing again and again in conversation. May be they want to stress that particular point. I think when you send a text message to your sister, she understands that you did not take her call deliberately?

@dpk262006 Yes, she knows. I've told her I do that. And I explained why I do that. She is happy enough with text messages.

I used to be very patient on phone calls (face to face long conversations always make me jittery), but then I got an unwanted caller who would bother me as long as they could. Combined with the early situation of work from home, where people were trying to replace personal meets with call, I developed both a mental as well as physical aversion to phone calls (even the shortest ones). Am in mends now, though it has still residual effects on my call to the family. It also means I am now on the other side of spectrum - you should be prepared to chat long as my days of silence get repaid in one single call.

I am definitely NOT a phone person. Usually the other person rattles on and on and on - I am more of a listener. I had my days and long hours of that - but thanks to texting I can have much shorter text conversations on my own time.

You mean to say that when you make a call, you do not make long conversations and you do not believe in spending much time on phone calls. It is the other way round that you patiently listen to the long calls. You are apparently more comfortable in writing a text message?

@much2say Yes, texting leaves a little scope for long interaction. The other person needs to think and then type his/her message to reply to your text message. . I agree with you that when we have something urgent to attend, we just cannot afford long calls.

@dpk262006 Well, texting takes less time AND the other person cannot tell long stories because it takes too much time to explain and type with texting . I don't mind actually talking to people . . . I just don't like in length when I have much to do.

It means that you do not take calls from those relatives who go on and on. But how do you avoid them? In case they are in need of your help?

I let that person talk until he or she run out of a thing to say. If I don't interrupt, it would be faster.

OH! That sounds interesting. But if the caller is making a long call, say it is going on and on for an hour, would you listen to him/her patiently till one hour?

@prinzcy That is also a point which you have made the guy on the other side of the line cannot come to know if you are actually 'listening' to him.

@dpk262006 I don't need to listen carefully you know. That person loves to talk, doesn't mean I need to listen or want me to listen

I don't like to spend too much time talking over the phone. I hate people who try to stretch the time on discussing things over the phone. These days due to facility of video calls devote too much time on the phone

Yes, generally speaking we do not like to take long calls, as it eats up lots of our time. However, there may be some callers who are close relatives and friends, you just cannot avoid them all the time, even if you wish to. It is lock down now a days and people cannot meet with each other, therefore, they make video call to know about each other's well being.

@dpk262006 even they are close relative or friends I don't like to talk much on the phone as I am not that much talkative and don't have much to talk to. I wonder how people can talk to their dear ones for an hour or more. I had started a discussion few days back on the same, here is the link
I have seen few people who are able to talk to someone over phone continuously for 4-5 hours. [em]angry[/em]It's really irritating as from where do they get so...

Yes, dear you got it right that I listen patiently, I do not want to sound rude. Even sometimes I delay my own work while listening a long call. OH! It is bad that no one calls you. I wish I could call you and listen to you.

It means that you told your friend that she should not call you as her calls disturb you? What do you tell your great aunt when she calls you?

it depends on the person, the timing of calls, and my availability. I love to chat with a few of my loved ones and do not mind being chatty with them. In fact, sometimes I look forward to it, especially in this lockdown. I generally ask them to call me in my free time in the evening post my tea or I call them at that time and as we talk I walk around in the house in my lobby and keep finishing a few chores that can be done along with the long call.

Yes, all the three factors you have mentioned are important for taking a long call. In this era of lockdown I do not mind taking a long call, if I am free or taking a walk on my rooftop. As some callers take at least half an hour or more to finish their call, I do not mind talking because by the time I complete my walk. . I put my cordless earphones on and walk and talk. When there is a long call, it is wiser on your part that you utilize your time in walking and completing your chores. The caller just cannot realize if you are doing your chores, till you tell her.

@arunima25 - So you kill two birds with one stone and this way you not only dispose of your work but you also talk to the caller. It is good that you have told others to call you in the mid afternoon or in the evening.

@dpk262006 Whenever I talk on phone, I keep walking. And even doing stuff like folding clothes and cleaning or ironing . It serves the double purpose Everyone knows that I take calls only between 2_4 in afternoon and then 7:30_9 in evening. They are courteous to call me in that time. I don't pick calls otherwise unless I think it's urgent.

Means it happens with you also. It is good that you have the choice to ignore long calls. If it is close relative or friend, for me, it gets difficult to avoid the call. Until and unless you take the call you could never know what for they have called? May be they are in need of your help. Have a nice day.

@JimBo452020 Actually, I have mentioned in the discussion about the two categories of people (i) those who make a brief call (ii) those who make a long call. I think @ladyhero is referring to those categories.
