No Hope For My Alien Potatoes

Sometimes it just happens. Luckily it is rare for me. But from time to time I buy a bag of potatoes, and it is not necessarily that I forget about them. I just forget to do something with them. Bake them, fry them up, cut them up and bake them seasoned in the oven, or whatever other use I might come up with. Today, with brats on the grill, and knowing my potatoes were turning into aliens in the bag, I decided to make a batch of my creamy potato salad. But lo and behold as I started to fish through the bag to find a good 3 pounds, it wasn't just that they were rooting, which is easily solved. Many of them were moldy and a couple were wet and soggy. So, it was a no. Danggummit! I had to throw the bag away. It's only about $3 down the tubes. But it is still $3 and it still irks me to no end. But, it is what it is. Luckily it is not the most expensive item in the pantry.

I hate when that happens. You buy something and forget about it. Then you've wasted what you spent. Doesn't matter if it's large or small, it's still a waste of money that could've otherwise gone elsewhere.

The problem for me is that I go on a potato kick and then I go off the kick and presto. I lose some. I guess it is what it is. lol

I hate when that happens. I keep my potatoes and onions in the pantry in a storage bin. Sometimes I forget they are even there. No matter the amount, it is money wasted that could've been used on something else.

@porwest I keep my onions in the pantry. If I use an onion but not all of it then I put it in an onion saver and put it in the fridge.

@lovebuglena I keep saying I am going to switch how I store onions, but have yet to do it. Although I will say my onions keep just fine in the crisper.

I always keep my onions in the crisper in the fridge, but many people have told me this is not the best way to store them. But yes, wasted money is no good.

$3 is a lot for me! Lots of potatoes too. I would be unhappy as well. But who can I blame but myself.

Unfortunately this was a 10 pound bag, and I did not use a single potato out of it before it spoiled.

When potatoes are threatening to go bad here, I plant them out back in a mound. Sometimes I remember to dig them up. Alien Potatoes sounds like a good name for a band.

That is an interesting idea. Do they grow into new potatoes?

You're right. Sometimes it just happens. We have a ton of potatoes; and we can't use them all. Some are bound to go bad. We got 2 bags of them from the senior program that passes out food once a month. I love potatoes; but there's only so many that you can eat.

I did resort to going down to 5 pound bags after throwing more than I wanted to out a few times. The 5 pound bag costs more per pound, but I'm not saving any money if I am throwing things away.

This is why I don't use the potato crate for storage any more. I keep them out so I can see them.

Maybe I should do that. It pains me to throw things away. Especially food.

Yeah. I mean, it's only $3. But it adds up if one is not careful. And time is money.

I know what you mean. I so love potatoes I will often eat them alone. So I have my daughter buy them but because I never go into the kitchen, I often forget they are in there for me to ask her to fix me so at times they get tossed

I think most of the time when it happens that some go bad, I just get off a potato kick for a while and then they go on me. I hate it every time it happens, though, but I guess it is what it is.

I remember a time a friend left a bag of them under her sink and forgot about them. I got under there to get her bleach and the smell was so bad. She never put them there again and taught me not to as well.
