4:30 AM Visit to the Emergency Room

Eugene, Oregon
June 14, 2021 5:34pm CST
Just as we were going to bed last night, Anne suddenly fell back on her pillows and lost consciousness. What made it even scarier was that her eyes remained open. I yelled her name a few times, and, with an open hand, gently slapped her cheek (yes, like we see in the movies) while wanting to run for my phone in another room. She woke up quickly, not realizing what happened. She seemed to be okay and did not want to go to the hospital, so that was fine until early a little after 4 this morning. Then, I was awake and she too seemed to be, but suddenly feel back again, groaned and again was out, eyes open. Seining a loved one like that feels panicky. They look dead to be honest, not moving. Again, I got her to wake up. I was going to call an ambulance. We have a membership system we pay for every year and it would cost nothing. But she would go only if I drove her. I ran to get some clothes and shoes on. Anne managed to get dressed and we left quickly for the ten minute drive to the ER. They got her in immediately and began all the usual diagnostic efforts, including an EKG, CT scan, a lung x-ray and an MRI. She was admitted to the hospital for "observation" with no results as to what is causing these blackouts. She had an infusion of the medicine that is fighting her cancer last Thursday. Was that it? That is something for her Oncologist to consider. She could be released this afternoon or they may have her stay overnight. I sort of hope they have her stay. Anyway, I came home to shower, shave, get a new mask and change clothes. I took a short nap too. Now, I will head back over there to sit with her and see if anything has been determined. We'll see what's next.

I will keep you and your wife in my thoughts and my prayers. I hope that they determine the exact cause of the episodes, and that if any more occur, she has a soft landing like the bed.

I hope it's not a bad reaction to her cancer treatment, though that is possible. Good luck.

I am sorry for both of you, I can imagine how scared you were. It is very possible that it is a side effet of the medicine she had last Thursday. I would ask to her Oncologist. Take care James.

That is scary. Hopefully, everything will be ok and they will be able to tell what caused this.

I think that not knowing what's going on makes the situation worse.

That is so scary. I hope it's just a side effect of the medication and will clear up. I'll keep you two in my prayers.

Oh man, that would have scared the hell out of me. I hope you can figure out the cause. I can't even imagine my reaction.

I hope they get it figured out, it's hard to treat it until they know what's wrong.
