Attack of the Japanese Beetles

Snapped this photo of two Japanese beetles on my rose of sharon blooms. They look all nice with their shiny green metallic-green bodies and copper-colored wing covers. But don't let that fool you. They will destroy your flowers. They are also on my roses and butterfly bushes. I have what is called a "Bag-A-Bug" in the front and back. It has a sweet scent that attracts the bugs, they fly in the bag and cannot get out. You can also spray your bushes with a Dawn soap and water mixture. Even with these bags, I still see beetles on the blooms. They move very slow, which makes it easy to just pick them off. I get a cup of soapy water for the bugs, then off they go to their demise, inside the no exit bags. So I go out at least once or twice a day to check for bugs. The morning is the best, they move slower then. Reminds me of the Brad Paisley song.. checking for ticks. Ha! That is for another post. But this is all worth it to have blooms in the garden. Some years are worse than others. Always something. But worth the time.

I thought what we have here were Japanese beetles, apparently we have green fruit beetles. My daughter nearly stepped on one on our walk earlier .

@CarolDM I don't blame you - especially if they will ruin your garden. Your beetles attack flowers, I guess ours attack figs/fruits.

@much2say Yes, they love to get the buds before they even bloom.

I just looked those up and they are so similar to the Japanese beetles. I am the exterminator lately with the bugs. Determined to get rid of them.

They killed my Rose of Sharon at the other house. I tried everything to get rid of them but they just kept swarming it. We haven't seen any at all on our plants at this house.

I think that is what is eating the leaves on some of my flowers. I can't catch them in the act though. Darn things.

They never seem to show up in this area but I don't really have any flowers planted now...just ones that show up in the spring.

@CarolDM Maybe some of that detergent and water spray would keep them away. I am pretty sure I have seen Jap beetle traps for sale too.

I got those once back in the late 1990s but I haven't seen them since. They're way too distructive.

Once they are in a bag, what will you do with them? Kill them?

Oh i see. I think this is a good bag, it does not need you to physically kill these critters.

@id_peace They are alive when they fly into the sweet smelling bag, it is a trap. They die when they cannot get out.
