A public service announcement (joking) about IKEA

The first thing to do as a partner avoiding IKEA projects is well to NOT GO TO IKEA. Projects appear there as if by magic or simply by pointing, so the first rule of avoiding those projects is truly just staying away. In my case, IKEA is 26 miles away by road. But luckily, living in DC< it is between 55 minutes to more than an hour and a half by car, reducing the risk of "let's run to IKEA." The following list is best practice recommendations for avoiding IKEA and IKEA projects. 1, Make sure your new home is more than an hour from the nearest IKEA. 2. Repair furniture correctly the first time. Duct tape will result in IKEA trips. 3. Embrace stacking – you don't need IKEA furniture if you stack things properly! 4. Remember that the siren's call of IKEA is those Swedish meatballs. Practice saying the following to your partner constantly! "I love Swedish meatballs, but they give me gas for three or four days afterward." Or, the variation of that which is "sweedish meatballs make me spend more time in the bathroom." Remember to mention this at least once a week until it is set! 5. Due to the nature of IKEA, you have to walk, make sure you have a leg or foot injury that is mentioned often! Walking is fun dear partner, but my leg is killing me! 6. Long-term play – this one has to be done a few times but is a guarantee to work once complete. Put things together wrong! Every single time you are asked, make sure it is not assembled correctly! 7. If these do not work, and you are forced to go to IKEA, the next recommendation is to move fast! Please do not stop, do not pass, go, do not collect 200 dollars (as IKEA gives you money, they are a money vacuum!) 8. Failing 1-7, there is one last-ditch excuse you can use! It is the insist on eating lunch before you walk the store. Then, begin to groan as the Swedish meatballs consume you. It is a desperate ploy and will only work one time!

I like IKEA, not for furniture, but we bought many little things there that I really like. IKEA is 25 minutes from home, I order online most of the time, why to waste time going there?

@DocAndersen I buy things that do not need to be assembled at IKEA, they have dishes, glasses, pots, pans, pillows, duvets, towels, curtains, candles, lamps, light bulbs... a lot more than only furniture and good quality and prices.

@LadyDuck they do - lots of interesting things - I just don't like adding projects!

I always make Pretty help me put boxed stuff together... After the second time "helping" me, she's the one who doesn't want to buy boxed furniture!

@DaddyEvil according to my wife, I actually am a sailor on the good ship IKEA and curse, loudly when putting things together.

I’m safe because the closes IKEA stores are two hours away (either Indianapolis or Cincinnati). I figure by the time I drive up there and back I would not have saved any money from buying something at Wally World. But your points are excellent! (And very funny.)

Just the thought if having to put stuff together gives me the chills I've heard about those IKEA meatballs and it is tempting just to go and try them Fortunately (or unfortunately) there is no IKEA close enough to experience that adventure

I heard that the originator of IKEA was buried in a coffin that came in a flatpack. I happen to love IKEA so I'll be on the lookout for any of those excuses from Vince!

@DocAndersen Too late! You've done it now. Vince will blame you forever for never being able to avoid going to IKEA.

Sometimes we have to resist the siren call of Ikea. Last time I was there, I bought slippers...who knew?

Thankfully, my house is really far from IKEA. It would be horrible otherwise. I can see where I would spend most of my weekends.

I have never been to Ikea. When I needed a new sofa, I did look at sofas on their website, but I didn't like the look to them.

Their shops here are like mazes, with only one entrance, and one exit, and you can't backfoot it out, have to keep going on, until the end. I always agree with my wife, very quickly, in all that she wants to buy, then funny enough, she often says, well, maybe we do not really need that, and so then we end up buying nothing there anyway. The stuff is a nightmare to assemble, and there is always a screw missing, or a nut, so I become a screwloose nut, by the end of an otherwise fun afternoon, trying to assemble the stuff in the right way, if there is a right way.
