Are you one-eyed about a sporting team?

MyLotter DaddyEvil (@DaddyEvil) said he had never heard of the term ‘one-eyed’ so I was wondering if anyone else has. In Australia, we say a person is one-eyed if they can’t see past their own team, usually a sporting team. They are absolutely besotted with their team and won’t have anything bad said about them. And can’t say anything good about an opposing team. Because of COVID, the grand final of our Australian Rules Football competition will be held in Perth, Western Australia. We are the only state that can have large gatherings although we won’t have a team in the grand final. Both teams will come from the Eastern States. Around 60,000 tickets have been sold for the event with almost all coming from our own state as our border is closed to those from other states. Some will attend because of the occasion and for the atmosphere, but each team will have West Australians who support them. No doubt, there will be plenty of one-eyed supporters in the stands. The photo is of a little girl at a different sort of football match.

I’m sure many sports fans are one-eyed fans. My husband, sons, and grandson are that way about the teams they love. Only natural to be that way. And no, I haven’t heard that term before. I call them sports nuts!

Isn't that interesting that you don't know the term. I wonder what other comments I'll get.

I never heard of the expression one eyed about a sporting team before. The only sport that I like is car racing.

No I've never heard it called 'one-eyed'. Yet I know of people who are this way. Myself, I usually favor a certain college against the other college teams. But whoever wins the final championship, I'm happy for that team.

It's a very common term here so I'm a bit surprised you haven't heard it. It seems no-one in the US has.

@JudyEv We just refer to it as our favorite team. Yes, most sports enthusiasts do have a team they favor over all the rest.

I'm wondering what will happen after the event, after having so many people crowded in the stadium. The two teams are in hotel 'bubbles' but any of them could possibly be infectious.

I remember this funny photo. We do not see "one-eyed" for people who can't see past their own team. In Italy we say they use "horse blinders".

That makes sense. Mostly, as part of the harness, they are called 'blinkers' or 'winkers' here.

At the risk of sounding one eyed...no monster, I can say I watch cricket only when Indian team is playing or is involved in trophy. And at the risk of sounding even worse, if Pakistan is still in competition, I do become doubly avid fan of our team.

As cricket fans ... I can tell you one thing. When India is playing with another country, we are out and out for Indian players, but when we are losing...that is when our true loyalties surface...we are cussing the batsmen and bowlers and fielders..and captain. They should not have done this, can't they do even this much, what sort of coaching is that...and so on.

I hadn't heard the term. I'm sort of one-eyed. I love my Packers and don't watch any other football. Though I don't usually say anything bad about other teams, except one that is known for its cheating ways. There are some I just don't like, but don't say anything bad about.

@Ronrybs I don't really understand the Tour de France. The tactics are all a bit beyond me. But I can understand that there is more pleasure in participating or engaging in a sport than merely watching it.

We are one-eyed to various degrees in terms of supporting our favorites. The world is thirsting for good old days with stadiums packed. I saw that in England as they have taken the pandemic in their stride.
