Another tick on the 'things to do' list

Today, we put a rail up in the garage. It’s one we made at our previous place. The spikes are railway ‘dogs’ which are used to help hold railway lines in place. We collect a few of these from time to time. We now have somewhere to hold extension cords and lengths of rope. Various people make smaller versions of this and charge small fortunes for much shorter lengths. Maybe it would be a good cottage industry for us. What do you think?

that is a cool way to handle that issue. due to my professional training, I always do a type of braid when rolling long cables (the ends aren't managed, and the wire isn't damaged either)

@myklj999 Exactly - i know how each type of cable needs to be wrapped. People wind ethernet cables so tight, and then wonder why the cable no longer well can be used as a network cable!

I'm sure there are better ways to roll them. I usually do them a different way so you can carry them by just one strand at the top.

@JudyEv it really depends - @myklj999 is talking (i think) about audio cables. those are handled differently than network cables. those are handled differently than power cables. the list goes on.

Sounds like a good way to use old railway 'dogs'.

YOu have a lot of extension cords. I only have one huge one for outside things, and a few smaller ones for inside things. Yours all seem to be about the same thickness and size. Good solution though.

Ok, I hope I understood correctly, 'good cottage industry' is a business venture?

Ok, that's probably it. I don't know anyone who does any kind of craft except Hank but his craft is restoring classic cars.

I guess it's another term for a 'small business' and probably run from home. We won't be doing it but crafty people might make things at home and sell them in various ways.

I am sure you can sell them. You should start an online shop, you are very good in crafting.

@LadyDuck We sometimes pick up the spikes along old railway lines while we're waiting for horses to come along. It would be less trouble to just sell the spikes. They're worth $1-2 each. It would be a lot less work! lol

We have seen them in craft shops and they charge much too much for them. That's our opinion anyway.

@toniganzon Sometimes the wood is highly polished and the spikes a shiny black but that's all pretty simple stuff too.

I roll extra cords up and wrap a rubber band around them and store them in a box. That's a really good idea though. You should try it and see how well they sell.

@JudyEv That sounds a lot easier... and you're getting good exercise while you follow the tracks, pulling out all the spikes... I wonder how long it will take before the trains have trouble after you've... uhm... "collected" all the spikes?

Maybe we will when we run out of other things to do. The spikes are worth about $2 each so maybe we'll just collect them when we're at a ride and sell them. That would be a lot less work!

Some powder-coat them black so they look a bit classier. It depends where you're going to hang them.

Well as in business, there is the good but, you got to deal with the not so good too. You'll be traveling a lot, insurance, & other expenses of business. But, if you come upon people in need of it, why not make extra money?

You could probably make your own if you could find some spikes. There are usually a lot to be found along railway lines, particularly old lines.
