Our latest project is finished

Here is the mystery project that we’ve been working on although most of you know by now that it is a vertical/Murphy/wall bed. It wasn’t the easiest thing we’ve ever assembled and the whole thing pulled out from the wall once. We’ve put more and much stronger plugs into the wall and there is no way it will come out now. In the photo on the right, you can see that it looks like a cupboard when it is in the upright position. It looks very neat when it is up. The next step is to buy a queen-sized mattress to fit it. And we might put a small Ikea cupboard each side just to finish it off. When the bed is made up, it will still fit into the cabinet and will be instantly ready if we have someone come to stay.

That looks really nice! I hope you find a good mattress for it and then I'll be down to try it out for you.

@DaddyEvil You might have to undergo 10 or 14 days Hard Quarantine in Australia. But as JudyEv is so generous, she might fund half of your Travel expense !!

@JudyEv I've slept on sofa beds... (Actually, tossed and turned all night on them.) Thank you for getting this kind instead. My back will thank you for that.

I originally wanted a sofa that would convert but Vince reckoned it wouldn't be comfortable enough and he didn't want a double bed, it had to be a queen so I suggested this. It's a queen and will have a good mattress so now we're all pretty happy. The mattress can only be up to 30cm high but we've found plenty up to that height.

That looks very nice. That also looks like it would be a huge project to put together.

@sallypup At least it is very sturdy and strong. I guess it had to be to support the spring mechanism and bed frame.

It wasn't the easiest thing we've ever done but it's up now and very securely fastened. The components were very heavy.

It looks like it has come together well. The Ikea cupboards sound like a good idea, too.

We have a big old cabinet in the same room. We really need to sell that before we'll be able to fit in the Ikea cupboards.

Buy a not too heavy and not too thick mattress, so you are sure you can keep the bed ready to be used. It looks really great.

@JudyEv 30 cm is a good mattress and comfortable enough. The sofas that you could transform in beds were not comfortable at all.

@LadyDuck We have found a mattress that we'd be happy with for ourselves although we won't be sleeping on this one. It will be delivered when we get back from our ten days away.

The mattress can be up to 30cm deep but there is a big choice at that measurement or less. It does look nice now it's up. Thanks. I might lash out and buy a new doona cover for it.

HEY! That's not nice! You could at least wait a bit so I can pretend to be gracious and offer you the bed while I sleep on the floor! Judy would probably throw us both out on our ears.

@wolfgirl569 Oh... Yeah, I could sleep in the back seat of my rental car. Then lock the doors so you couldn't climb in when Vince kicked you out..

@DaddyEvil I have been told I snore. So you might want to be outside anyways I think after an hour or 2 she would. Vince might beat her to throwing us out.

It's a wonderful way to make use of space, especially when the bed is only needed every once in a while. When it's not being used as a bedroom, what do you use the room for? You and Vince did a great job putting it together. Turned out really nice!

@JudyEv Speaking of jigsaws, my daughter and I are working on one right now that we bought at Disney World. It's a 50th anniversary puzzle showing Walt Disney holding hands with Mickey Mouse, with Cinderella's Castle in the background.

@moffittjc I enjoy doing the odd jigsaw but I mostly go for the smaller ones now - less than 1,000 pieces.

Sometimes I'll need to put the clothes airer there and I have a small table I can set up if I want to do a jigsaw. We also kept a couple of trestles so if we want to do smaller jobs eg spread out photos to sort through them or whatever, we'll have room to set up the bigger trestle.

That looks like a big achievement. So what did you do for those Spring adjustments? Any special material(s) that you use? Here we would have to find a very trained or a very genuinely keen carpenter to make such a thing. Casual ones or those who are mainly with the aim of making money would find making such a thing very difficult.

The spring mechanism had four springs attached and we had to put two more on each assembly. That was very difficult and one spring we put in a different slot to where it was supposed to be. It doesn't seem to have made a difference to the action. The number of springs needed depended on whether it was double, queen or king. You might have read it came in a big box and we put it together following the instructions. It wasn't too difficult but I guess we're getting a bit experienced with it all now. Some parts we had to puzzle through and think about what they actually meant. The weight was also just about too much for us as it is very sturdy. We had a friend help us lift the bed part and slip it on the hinges.

Ikea don't actually make these sort of beds and the instructions were nowhere near as clear as Ikeas. But you're right about Ikea having great ideas.

Vince was worried that a sofa bed wouldn't be comfortable and I didn't want a huge bed taking up the space and only being used occasionally. This seems a good solution.

So that's what was in that big box?? Looks like you did a good job putting it all together and certainly is perfect for company. Yesterday both my daughters spent the afternoon putting together a desk and shelving combination for my daughters office space. It took them so long and I was thinking of you and that big box you had posted in a previous post. Putting stuff together certainly is a pain and I miss the days when everything came assembled.

Yes, that's what was in the box. The instructions for this weren't as clear as Ikea instructions and parts of it were a battle. It has a very strong spring mechanism and it was nearly too strong for us. I guess your daughters got there in the end?

@JudyEv yes my daughters got everything together and although it was time consuming it looks really nice and I think will be better than the previous setup she had for her office. I like your Murphy bed and think it's a great idea and isn't taking up room when you don't have company

We won't have as many staying as we did in Donnybrook and, when we don't need the bed, it frees up the room if I want to put up a small table for a jigsaw or put the clothes-airer up or whatever.
