Room with a view

We will be eating in our swanky hotel over the next few days. It is a large place by Perth, West Australian, standards with a fine reputation. Luckily, being so large, it has a number of eating places, ranging from really, REALLY expensive to just moderately so. I mentioned to someone that hopefully our meals would only cost us an arm – and not an arm and a leg. So there’s another idiom. Have you heard of something costing an arm and a leg, meaning very expensive? This is the view from our hotel room. I'll write more about the bridge later.

Yes, I use that phrase often when talking about what it costs to buy the things I would like to try to afford. In my case most things I want cost 3 arms and 4 feet.

We shared a seafood platter which was very nice. Then I went overboard and had a banana split - one of my favourite desserts - but it was huge!! Much bigger than I needed but I still managed to enjoy it.

They should say it could cost you a kidney or a heart. Some rogues sell body parts but an arm or a leg wouldn't be much use to anyone. lol

@JudyEv - What a view! I would love to see Perth someday. One of my son-in-laws was there one time. He was stationed on an aircraft carrier in the Navy, and they stopped there. That view is fabulous!

@JudyEv - From your photos, and what my son-in-law said about it, it sounds like a lovely city. I'm glad you were able to go there for your 50th Anniversary. Congratulations. My husband and I celebrated our 50th Anniversary in October. I told my husband that when we got married, I don't think I knew anyone who had been married that long. My parents had only been married about 23 years. My grandparents had only been married about 43 or 44 years. Reaching our 50th anniversary was something I never even thought about!

@DeborahDiane My parents got to 61 years and Fiacre told me a couple there (or maybe England) had got to their 81st anniversary. They were 100 and 102. That's really quite amazing. But you're right. Golden weddings used to be few and far between.

Wow! That's a beautiful view! Are you guys gambling? Usually, in gambling hotels the rooms aren't too expensive so the guests can gamble their money away instead of needing to use it to pay for their room. (At least, that's what I've heard. I've never gone gambling before...) Yes, I say things cost an arm and a leg when it's really expensive.

@JudyEv Always take any excuse for a nice stay away from home. When Pretty was younger, I jumped at every chance to see new places with her. That's a really good deal, too.

We're not gambling but there seems to be quite a few who are. I think covid is keeping a lot away as the rooms used to be crowded some years ago. The rooms are still expensive. We were offered two for the price of one which seemed a good reason to come here.

@JudyEv Pretty! I have been past there many many times but sadly mostly during the day so it's rare I get to see it lit up so pretty like that. Hope you had a lovely time! I've always wanted to stay at the Crown. Maybe one day!

@VivaLaDani13 I don't really know but I'm pretty sure it is. Vince says it was the Burswood Casino and there are no other hotels close by. There is also the Crown Metropole (hotel) on the same complex. You can walk from one to the other or to the casinos, restaurants, pool, etc.

@JudyEv I'm so glad you had a good time! I would hope so considering it can cost an arm and a leg depending. And thank you, I really hope I can too. It looks amazing. I've walked around the casino once or twice. I am still confused though, is the Crown the replacement name of Burswood? If so, I had stayed once in Burswood but keep getting confused if Crown is actually the same hotel?

It does if you're paying $360 for a three course meal. I just don't think any meal is worth that. Maybe if I were a big eater, it would be okay but honestly, it can't cost them anything like that to provide.

@JimBo452020 That's what we thought. We didn't eat there and we also passed on the $95 meal although that was a buffet so a bit eater might have thought it worthwhile.

Idioms - ahh.. When you teach them to non-native speakers, you gotta prepare yourself for the endless questions. Why arm and leg? Why not eyes and ears? lollll

Haha - yes, I can imagine that happening. I had a Vietnamese lady ask me why they called it 'white tea' when it was actually brown. If you're a native speaker you don't think about things like that.
