Pity about the typo

We now live in a gated village of about 120 houses. It’s been built in various stages but there is very little rhyme or reason as to the house numbers. Visitors and tradesmen sometimes drive round and round trying to find a particular number. The developers have now put a big sign at the front entrance and it shows all the houses with their numbers. This is a great idea but they need a new proofreader. There are two 93’s but no 92. I’ve seen many signs which have typos and some of these are at very important sites. You’d think they’d be doubly careful about getting such signs correct in the first place. Photo taken by one of our residents

I used to laugh a lot when someone at Walmart would misspell something on a sign there. I started pointing the misspellings out to management. They weren't as amused about them as i was.

Half the time they don't seem to care. I hate wrong spelling or grammatica errors.

@JudyEv They don't care because they don't realize something is wrong. Management at Walmart aren't selected for their knowledge of spelling. It annoys me when I see it. I normally just don't say anything...

That’s almost funny but not to the people in number 93 and 92. Surely they’ll redo the sign when they find the mistake.

I'm not sure what they'll do. The sign looks pretty expensive. Perhaps they'll just use a marker pen. The whole community is now keeping an eye on it to see what happens.

@RubyHawk I can only guess that no-one bothered to read through the numbers.

@JudyEv I would have thought they’d have seen the mistake when or before they put the sign up.

It seems to me that young people in their 20s and 30s have the impression that it's only human to make mistakes so they don't even try to do a good job.

The first 92 would be 93 I would think but that can be confusing for someone looking for 92.

If they have any brains at all, they should only be confused for a few moments. 92 has to be between 91 and 93 surely.

The more we use electronic things to type, the less we remember that we have to check everything carefully, because humans eyes are still better than computers.

@JudyEv I notice every day, we would have not passed the basic exams in school if we made so many grammar errors back in time.

That's very true. Newspapers don't seem to worry about spelling and grammar nowadays. You see some really awful errors from time to time.

I would hate to be a delivery driver. At least the postmen/women know the route, but with all the new online shopping deliveries there are always people getting lost around here, because this road is divided into four different sections!

That doesn't sound very helpful. Such drivers have trouble coming to our houses and we have to give detailed instructions if we want to go past the gate into the village. This sign should help a lot - except for number 92, of course! Luckily, 92 and 93 are good neighbours.

@Fleura That does sound a real nightmare. You'd think they'd sort something out when it's as convoluted as that.

I've seen typos on important papers too. It makes me shake my head. A set of blueprints for the church had altar spelled alter. It was never corrected.

I have seen a few big signs with typos and it seems to me that the more expensive the sign the less willing to correct it! There is quite the biggie on London Underground
At Embankment Tube Station, there is a typo that has been around for years and, can be, rather misleading. In the passageway to the Bakerloo Line the route map...

I went back and reread that. We came to a T-junction in backroads Ireland once and signs pointing right and left both said 'To The Ferry'. Of course, it was perfectly simple. Both roads went in semi-circles to the ferry. It completely threw this poor Aussie tourist.

Yes, I'm afraid so. Back in May. We are getting older and thought it would be very difficult for our boys (Melbourne, [in Victoria, not Florida!] and Ireland) if anything happened to us and they had to sort out 18 acres and all the accumulated 'good junk'. So we've moved to a suburb in a gated community. They keep saying I'll get used to it. So that's it in a nutshell. If you wanted to catch up, there are a lot of posts with the keyword 'Treeby' which is the suburb we're in.

It's all spellcheck's fault. I proofread a friend's resume once. He had written something about soffits and 'eves'... I had to explain why it was wrong even though his spellcheck said it was ok. Then there are those 'stationary' signs that should be 'stationery'. So, has anyone sorted out the two numbers?

Someone should have properly checked it before displaying it. Haven't you told the authority about the mistakes you found on it.
