We’ve spent a bit of time at my brother-in-law’s place recently and I kept getting a fright from his garden hose which looks for all the world like a snake. Australia has a bad rap because people think the place is crawling with snakes but a great many of our citizens go through their life and many never see a snake or only see one in a zoo or wildlife park. I am not really afraid of them but do have a healthy respect for them. I must admit I got a couple of frights from this harmless hose.

My hose is green and I am glad of this. My neighbor thought he was grabbing the hose and he grabbed a snake.

@JudyEv - Before approaching a bush, I move with a stick to be sure they are not hidden inside. They seem to love to hide in the rosemary bush, I find their skin every year there.

@LadyDuck That is very scary that your neighbor instead of grabbing the hose grabbed a snake instead. How did he feel after he saw what he grabbed? I am with you I do not like them either. I hate bees more.

Makes me glad my hose is purple...lol. No mistaking that for a snake!

Maybe you should get some yellow paint and write “NOT A SNAKE” on the hose. I’ve never seen a dangerous one anywhere but in a proper, safe place (a zoo or a reptile farm). I’ve seen a couple of harmless ones on hikes, though.

They can be incredibly hard to see in their natural habitat.

But you were just burying reticulated pythons at your niece's house! I thought you liked snakes!

I don't like them near houses. If they stay away from the house then they're allowed to live.

Wow I can’t imagine not seeing one my whole life. We have many in our yard. I feel bad when the lawn mower gets them.

@JudyEv we do get rattlesnakes here and copperheads but the rest are harmless. I’ve been in the woods so much in my life and never saw a poisonous one but I know lots of people who see them often. Trapesing through the woods geocaching not paying attention to the ground and looking at the direction on my phone I am very thankful to never have stepped on a poisonous one.

I can see it causing a fright if you catch it from the corner of your eye. I do not mind snakes, but they mind their business and I mind mine, we get along.

Beware the harmless-looking hose. I went to pick one up by the nozzle and got a face full of water. My missus, standing by the tap, thought it was great fun.

Most snakes are keen to get away from people which is a good thing.
