Are Face Masks Effective?

There has been a lot of controversy on this site about the effectiveness of masks against COVID-19 and its variants. A recent article in AARP Magazine stated that studies done by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and other organizations found that masks are effective to a certain extent. They show 9 different masks. Here are some of the findings shown in the percentage of COVID-19 particles that they filter out: N95 and KN95 masks - 80-95% Medical procedure mask, loops twisted around ears, corners tucked - 60% (These are the masks most seen out in public and easily available...shown in photo WITHOUT ear twists and corners tucked) Cotton bandana, bandit style - 49% Medical procedure mask with ear loops - 39% (shown in photo) Single layer polyester gaiter - 38% We will continue to wear our medical procedure masks. 39% and 60% are better than nothing. I read that the N95 and KN95 masks are 99% effective. I double up in certain situations.

I think it has been proven for the fact that even with lockdowns, masks, remote working, remote learning and all the other measures we took, that the media reported surge after surge after surge, even after vaccinations were widely available, three years later... Nothing worked. But of course that is just my opinion. I also still contend that if masks were an answer the CDC would have immediately said the ONLY acceptable mask was one that was more effective, the N95 and KN95 masks. But wearing a piece of tissue over your face would have been entirely acceptable throughout this, meaning most of the masks were designed for peace of mind more than anything. Not for any real protection from anything. My belief is that the most effective measures, if there were any, were vitamin D, vitamin C, zinc, and hand sanitizer. These measures, I believe, were also more effective than the vaccines.

I bet a lot of clothing brands made a ton of money selling cloth masks. I have ones from Tori Burch my mom bought me. I’ve seen people wear masks from Louis Vuitton, Gucci, Chanel, etc. Wonder how much they paid for those.

I agree with you. None of the measures are enough and some were enforced far too late (the same WHO that told us we should be scared of Omicron is the same who didn't pay attention when things started in China and told us "meh, it's probably nothing"). I'm happy to wear a mask and keep my distance, but I would never let any government force me to have an untested, rushed vaccine injected in my body. I take care of my body, it takes care of me. And my last experience with Covid, which I got from my fully vaccinated husband, proved that. Only 1 week of symptoms vs 3 weeks for my vaccinated husband. I'm back to normal, he's still struggling with some mild symptoms.

Masks were nothing but a placebo. If Covid were so deadly, why haven't hazmat disposal receptacles been placed in central locations? All that contaminated waste is a biological hazard. Why is it that the waste from hundreds of millions in the US alone, lays littering sidewalks, parking lots, shopping carts, the beach and on store shelves? If Covid-19 were really such a deadly virus, the waste PPE issue would have been addressed. Just one more thing that makes no sense. People are up to 4 vaccinations now in just about a year. Yet they can still contract, spread and die from the virus. Too many lies by officials at CDC, WHO, FDA and the big lie from CCP. If you feel safer wearing a mask, wear one. I will use one if it's mandatory to enter buildings.

@healerWitch Seasonal flu vaccines went through clinical testing of four years. It was approved by the FDA in 1984. It has been on the market for 37 years and still only proves 45% effective. People are volunteering to be test subjects in live clinical trials. I will wait for the new and improved vaccines that will be available in a few years lol. I echo many of your thoughts.

I see many commenting "I did my part for society, and I'm gonna avoid the unvaccinated as best as I can". But it's the vaccinated now who are the super spreaders, because they've been lied to about what the actual vaccines do, the unvaccinated are the most cautious. How many of these vaccinated people go and read scientific literature about how these vaccines are made and what they really do, or how Covid really spreads and who gets negatively affected the most? If vaccines were the miracle we were all waiting for (and at such record speed) why they didn't figure out cancer yet, or even the flu? Every time I got the flu shot, I was severely sick with the flu for the whole year. I stopped having it and I stopped getting the flu! Why force an untested vaccine in my body if fully vaccinated people still get infected and die from the virus? Why push it to our children now when we don't yet know how they will affect them in the long run (and since we know now there are increased risks for myocarditis, which is an inflammation in the heart muscle that there is currently no cure for?) I was all good with the distancing, staying home and the masks, but the brute enforcement of vaccines whether we like it or not and without even doing proper checks on how it may affect an individual is nothing short of dictatorship. I told my husband I'd rather die from Covid than getting injected with that thing. They couldn't even get the flu shot right after all these centuries.

@Vikingswest1 exactly, and flu has been with us for centuries (well at least according to records by Hippocrates himself), so plenty of time and experience with that respiratory disease there unlike this coronavirus. I'm not gonna wait. I had the Covid, I survived, that's more than enough for me lol. There's no point in getting one now, especially since I work and shop online from home (and I'm not exactly an extrovert who likes parties either lol).

the ones that refuse to wear masks are most likely to be reusing the jab so most likely to be infected so a good reason to wear one out and about .

@porwest If your fully vaxed you are less likely to get infected and pass it on, and much less likely to get seriously ill. Yes, vaxed people can have symptoms. Both my brothers were fully jabbed but both then got covid but just a mild disease. .America has lost 950,000 people to Covid after bonehead Trump said it was just a flu and gone by Spring.

the ones that refuse to wear masks are most likely to be reusing the jab so most likely to be infected so a good reason to wear one out and about . @thedevilinme So help me to understand. Hmm. The ones who are vaccinated 1) get sick. OR 2) they don't get sick and carry it to the unvaccinated. Yet the unvaccinated did not get it until the sick or infected vaccinated person gave it to them. If the unvaccinated are the problem then why are the vaccinated getting the UNVACCINATED sick? And if the unvaccinated AREN'T sick before the vaccinated MAKE them sick, then how did the vaccinated GET Covid in the first place? Just curious your thoughts on this little conundrum we have here.

There are and would be lot of controversies surrounding this topic as long as virus is there. I feel safe to wear mask so I wear it. I don't go much in detail as there is no point. We aren't scientists or doctors, so can do whatever the experts say.

@porwest Paradigms change over decades and centuries. Have you read Thomas Kuhn's "The Structure of Scientific Revolutions?" A good read. I believe in empirical science. But, as a "scientist," I understand that nothing is "proven."

We wear the N95 and KN95 masks if we need to cross the border, because those are mandatory in Italy. Here we wear the disposable medical masks. I prefer to wear a mask and not take risks.

The first step to gaining control is compliance. Always keep that in mind. There is a part of me that thinks that Covid was really just a power check. I think they figured out they could control a lot of people... But clearly not the masses.

Agreed. I double mask, so six layers of of protection. News, in Doctor's of Waikiki, says he sees lots of covid patients, but never catch it, for he wears plastic shield mask & nose and mouth mask. I went out to get the shield mask too. The experts CDC, say wear mask, so I wear mask and now the plastic shield mask too.

We use N95 but many we see on a daily basis wear nothing. Our plan is to keep using masks until we stop hearing people are getting one virus or another. Might have our faces covered for years-but it's okay with us.
