From March 14th to March 18th I was in Branson, Missouri for vacation with a friend. About an hour from there was the Laura Ingalls Wilder house and museum which my friend was so eager to see. I didn't really care either way, but I was happy to go with her to something she wanted to do. This is a picture of the house Laura Ingalls Wilder and her husband lived in which their daughter built for them. It was a lovely weather day, but a lot of walking. The museum was about two miles away from the house, and very interesting. My friend even bought a bonnet at the gift shop. I bought a water and beef jerky at the gift shop because I was hungry and the museum was in the middle of nowhere!
Did anyone watch Little House on the Praire? I didn't, but my sister did.

Yes, I read all the Little House books when I was a kid, and watched the series as well. We passed the signs for Laura Ingalls birthplace I think it was in Desmeth SD...when we were traveling to Yellowstone, but sadly since we were on a tight schedule could not stop.. I hope to, if I get out that way again.

I think she was born in Wisconsin but I could be wrong. The 1st book in her series "Little House in the Woods" is set in Wisconsin near the town of Pepin but in an actual biography about her it was stated that she wasn't born until her family had inadvertently moved into Indian territory in Kansas which would be book 2 "Little House on the Prairie".

I've read the entire series of her books dozens of times and a book called "Becoming Laura Ingalls Wilder". It was interesting to learn how she altered her life story to write the Little House series of books. I didn't really watch the TV series growing up through I've seen a few episodes.
If I remember correctly Rose Wilder Lane (their daughter) built them the house and they stayed there for a bit but eventually wound up moving back to the first house that they built on the property.

I loved The little house on the prairie and I would love to visit this house. I had no idea that there was a museum too.

It was honestly fascinating. Even the small facts were cool, like Laura was 4'11, and her husband was 5'4. There was a second house on the property, but I didn't get a picture. They lived in that house before Rose built the Rock house for them. The Rock house was more up to date, and prettier.

It was required reading at my junior high school in Minnesota back in 1975 or so. The books were riveting and fun to read. It was presented as factual experiences of family life in written form.
I didn't find out it was fiction or part fiction until years later.
I did watch some of the television series when it was first ran on TV.
It was still entertaining but didn't capture the spirit of the books in the same way.
My wife loves the show and has every episode, the pilot and subsequent movies all on DVD.

I loved all of her books. Of course, most people just remember the show, which we all enjoyed, but much of it was elaborations and some people who never existed in Laura's life. But often shows and movies are not like the books, so that's expected. I want to see the South Dakota site, too. I have seen the house and museum, I hope to again as it's been awhile now. Glad you got to see it.
