Rain and sinusitis do not mix well. As I stayed home yesterday, I was fine. By the time I walked to the garage this morning my sinuses were getting the Buddy Rich treatment.
The rain gives us flowers, and I give you another song with “flower” in the title.
#8: Wildwood Flower - Carter Family
The national anthem of country guitar pickers! I was part of the “all-guitar marching band” at the groundbreaking of the new Country Music Hall of Fame in Nashville (so I can legitimately say I played guitar with Chet Atkins!) in 1997. We led the Hall of Famers from the arena to the site of the construction for the ceremonies.
And what do you think we played for five blocks? “Wildwood Flower” and “You Are My Sunshine.”
But this song does have lyrics. And, although it’s permanently linked to the Carter Family (June Carter’s mom’n’em), it predates them by at least sixty years. The earliest version of the song is from 1860, titled “I’ll Twine ‘Mid the Ringlets,” by Maud Irving and J.P. Webster, the latter known for the hymn “In the Sweet Bye-and-Bye.” But, back then, we didn’t have BMI databases and ASCAP searches, so ol’ A.P. Carter took credit for it himself. Who was going to argue? Webster died in 1875, so he could hardly dispute the claim.
Oh, well. If there is a “Mount Rushmore” of country music songs, this song is on it.
As you listen to it (Linda? Don’t.
) you’ll probably be surprised (or sickened) by the primitive nature of the song. Not so much the recording technique, but the actual performance. You’ll probably think a 4-year-old can do better on guitar (and probably the vocals, too).
Not me. This simplicity is what I’d take any day of the week over those hat-wearing, tight-jeaned “hunky boys” singing Bon Jovi with a twang and calling it “country music” today who couldn’t tell A.P. Carter from Jimmy Carter.
Yeah, I’m old and set in my ways. Songs like this are why.
Wildwood Flower
Written by Joseph Philbrick Webster and Maud Irving (later attributed to A.P. Carter)
Recorded by the Carter Family
Released as a single, 1928

I am usually good at deciphering, but for the life of me, I can't figure what twine with my mingles means

It’s 19th century talk for braiding her hair and sticking flowers in the braids.

@FourWalls Thank you, something I shall long remember now if I ever get back to hairdressing. I'll say it to people
and hope I wont be charged with mingling or something

Don Bowman referenced that kind of wildwood flower (later covered by Jim Stafford).
It’s scary that I can go from The Cult to this in four songs, isn’t it?

They were one of the acts on the “legends of music” country music set of postage stamps (back when stamps were 29 cents, so that should tell you how long ago it was
), along with Hank Williams, Bob Wills, and Patsy Cline.

I appreciate the simplicity in the old music which many in the current generation fail to.
I am sorry that your sinusitis is acting up. Hope you feel better. I am too exhausted today.

@FourWalls That's good. Hope it's pleasant enough for outdoor activities. It was supposed to be cloudy here today. It's 10 AM and I don't see any cloud. The sun is bright and hot.

I felt the humidity back for the first time earlier. Not a good feeling. Hope your sinuses are better eventually. I did listen a lot to eh Carter family. But still not big fan. They do not make them like this any more. Thanks for keeping the classics alive.

I understand. It takes a certain “mentality” to listen to those old records from nearly 100 years ago (that’s why I always laugh when I hear someone refer to a song from the mid-2010s as an “old song”). I’m better today because it isn’t raining.

@FourWalls I know, that is not classic from the 2000 era. Too funny is right.

I was so happily surprised when I was out west last October. The humidity was in the neighborhood of 8%, and my snot turned to dust. I loved it after the first day of getting used to it.
