Some horses from Friday's training day

Two days ago we took photos at a dressage training day. Each horse did a series of movements (called a ‘dressage test’) then a trainer made suggestions as to how they might improve and the horse and rider either did the whole or parts of the test again. The two horses on the right are further advanced in their training while the other two are novice horses. The horse top left is a Welsh cob and very typical of its breed. You may not be able to see it here but it had a very thick, wavy tail. Welsh cobs are more often used as harness ponies than for dressage but this one was going very kindly for its owner. The horse lower right is a Hanoverian, a German breed, and imported at great expense from England. It is nineteen years old so very experienced. We were really taking photos as a favour for a friend so only spent the morning there, taking photos of six different horses. We've had to come home as we didn't realise Vince didn't have enough of his heart tablets. But it's all good. We'll regroup and leave again Friday for the next endurance ride.

Nice looking horses there. I think they are of good breeds since they looked so elegant looking in the way they stand and walk.

@JudyEv And I think the horses are trained to walk in a certain way so that they look good. I have seen one in here many years ago but I did not get to go near them but they are tall, unlike the regular horses we have in here.

To do dressage well, the riders would be looking for a certain type of horse - one that was well conformed, in particular.

@rsa101 They undergo a lot of training to be balanced and hold their heads correctly, etc. Mostly dressage horses are quite tall.

Yes, the Welsh cob top left does have a rather thick tail. How long does the endurance ride season last?

The endurance season starts in April and might go to early December with rides being held most fortnights.

They're all beautiful but my favorite is the one on the bottom right, I've always loved black horses

Black (and white) horses are hard to photograph. Black absorbs all the light and white reflects it all. That's where the processing later can make a big difference.

Maybe it’s the way the sun is hitting its coat, but that horse’s coat in the lower left photo is GORGEOUS!!!!!!! We have lots of jackasses in town this week. Horses, too, for the Kentucky Derby.

Thanks for the kind words. I've read that this weekend's endurance ride will have 30 newcomers attending which is a huge increase all at once. It makes a difference where the ride is held as newcomers often aren't really set up with floats (horse trailers) and camping equipment.

@kobesbuddy Yes, that's true. Those doing the short distances don't need to camp so they might just come for the day.

@JudyEv The newcomers aren't prepared for the weekend. They don't realize which camping equipment they will need.

Enjoyed the photographs. Also I liked the information that you shared about these horses. Hopefully you and Vince are in best health. One observation that I made is that there is a very bright sunshine where the activities are taking place. Have a nice Thursday!

It was hard taking photos of black or white horses on the white arena. Black horses absorb the light and white horses reflect it as does the white arena. It was a really lovely day. We always have to get our backs to the sun so we'd just about prefer an overcast day.

@JudyEv In my city, we do have some horses but not for this kind of training. I mean they were used for tourists who just want to go around the city while being guided by the horses' owners.

Can you get riding lessons there? There are a great many horses in Australia. I think the industry as a whole has the third largest number of employees.

@JudyEv Zhivago similar to the famous Zhivago Doctor of the movie. I have to say that Omar Sharif was awesome in that movie.

Oops! Forgetting to make sure there are enough heart meds isn't good! I'm glad you guys noticed before he ran out! From the photos it looks like three of them are more advanced than the horse on the top left. They're all pretty, though.

Some like their space and/or their privacy. If he just nibbled and didn't bite, I guess he was giving you a warning.

@JudyEv Yes, he was very gentle, he just wanted me to get my head out of his stable! But I had a bit of slobber on my shoulder afterwards!
