Was a Crime Committed

My sister called yesterday to tell me about a strange happening in her neighborhood. A neighbor called her to explain why the deputy sheriff was in another neighbors yard. He told my sister that he was mowing his yard about sunset when he heard a series of gunshots coming from a neighbors house. He ran to the house and knocked on the door, the woman inside ordered him to go away. So he did and called the sheriff's office. The deputy sheriff was sent out to the house. The woman wouldn't come out at first, but finally did. She wasn't cooperative but the deputy talked her into telling him what the gunshots were about. The woman said a man had come to her window for several nights calling a woman's name and she shot to drive him away. The deputy went into the house to investigate and found sixteen gunshots in the ceiling of her bedroom. Evidently he thought the woman was a mental case and removed her to a mental facility to be checked out.

She’s probably safe in jail until she goes before a judge. I don’t know I’m guessing.

@CarolDM That was my first thought. If she saw a man in the window she might have shot the ceiling to scare him off rather than shooting him. If that’s the case I hope she isn’t charged.

@BelleStarr I understand. I’m still not used to it but they tell me it gets better in time. I do know it takes time. It’s been eight months since Leo passed away and a shorter time for you. All we can do is keep hanging in.

I wonder if that might have been a little drastic but then no one wants someone shooting in their neighborhoods.

That’s true. If she saw someone she should have called the police and shot the man if he got in her house before the police came.

The woman might be speaking the truth but she could have called the police instead of firing at the ceiling. It might be that she is a mental patient. But we can't call it a crime on her part.

That’s what I think. It could have been someone trying to break in but she should have called the police. Another thing is it’s out in the country. It would take awhile to get there.

@RubyHawk That is very weird. She was defending herself and she had no idea about the guy. Unless there is something missing here then I do not believe she should be in the mental institution.

Absolutely. She could have seen someone. I believe the deputy could only take her to jail and they’d have to go before a judge to prove insanity.

@RubyHawk I do not believe she is crazy and should not have to go before a judge and just go home. She has the right to defend herself.

I think it was just right that ahe be checked if she has indeed some mental health problem that needs to be addressed. I dont think there was crime commited but she caused alarm in the neighborhood whe she shoot. She could have made police report if she sees someone shouting at her house.

@RubyHawk yes i wouod like to know that too. Since if her allegations were true then your neighborhood is not safe then. A stalker might be on loose there or if tgey determine that she is mentally unstable she should be treated too.

@rsa101 It isn’t my neighborhood but it is my sisters. I hope they do the right thing. I’ve heard nothing more.

She said the man was at her window. I have mixed feelings about the whole episode but the incident did need to be checked out. I want to hear the ending of the story.

I don't study Law, but it sounds like a dangerous situation. I don't know what you have to do to scare off someone, but I doubt shooting at the ceiling is a common method. Glad nobody was hurt, hopefully the lady will get all the help she needs.

@RubyHawk Yeah, sixteen gunshots, she didn't call the police and didn't trust them, but at least she aimed at the ceiling.

@sabtraversa I might be wrong but I think if someone was about to break in on me I’d shoot the man instead of the ceiling. I guess you’d have to be there. Then again she might be a mental case.

It was dangerous. But if she was definitely frightened of someone breaking in but didn’t want to shoot the person she could have shot through the ceiling to scare him off.

Just because she may be "mental" does not mean that no one has been harassing her and peering in her window. I hope they looked for foot prints in the ground beside it.

I’m curious about what happens. If the woman is mentally deficient she will have to go before a judge to be declared unstable. How long does that take? Will she be held in jail? It seems complicated.
