people are too ready to be offended these days

May 11, 2022 10:50am CST
I was playing tennis with some people and mentioned that we were both from the United Kingdom and were playing two people from peru . My partner was very offended and insisted she was from the United Kingdom, shes from Ireland , Oh I said ! southern Ireland . There is no such thing as southern ireland she said and told me she was from northern Ireland Now correct me if Im wrong but the united Kingdom covers Great Britain and northern ireland since the correct title is The United Kingdom Of Great Britain and Northern Ireland..............so she cant say she isnt from the United Kingdom (by the way I was being careful not to say great britain or England ......was a bit miffed that someone could still find something to be offended about

Well, just to be precise, The Republic of Ireland is NOT a part of the UK. It is a completely independent nation that has no sovereign ties with the UK, Great Britain or England. It is no longer under English rule. Northern Ireland is a part of the United Kingdom.

@58lordstreet The Northern Ireland is part of the UK, as well as Corsica is part of France, but people who are from Corsica will never say they are from France NEVER! Their motto, "Better to die Corsican than live as a French".

The Northern Irish must not be happy with being part of the UK, but she has to face the ugly truth.

well yes the United kingdom covers both , Great Britain is the main island......there are better things to be annoyed about I would think .Every other part of the UK can celebrate its identity but if you celebrate being English everyone gets up in arms about it

@58lordstreet I understand their frustration but hate leads nowhere, it is not constructive.

You are so right! It's annoying that people can be so pedantic and anyway the news seems to be that Northern Ireland don't want to go back to being one 'Ireland'. Sometimes you just can't win.

@58lordstreet Nowadays you don't need to try to offend anyone. Just open your mouth and say anything and someone will be offended by it.

@porwest very true - even if its the least offensive thing lol

Maybe they are not happy being with UK. But this is a petty issue and could have been overlooked.

Kinda like the way most cities in Oklahoma are as modern as New York City & Detroit & all the other modern cities in America; but (as a famous comedian mentioned in his latest special) you mention "Oklahoma," and you still think of a room full of shirtless, 'one-strap overalls'-wearing banjo-pickers ... "Yeee-Hawww"

People seem to be looking for excuses to be offended .... maybe it would be best if we only used body and sign language .......... hmmmm I wonder how that would work

That's okay as we had territorial wars in New York City today you can insult someone by calling them out for being from Da Bronx or from Brook-lynn!

Is the beef still continuing in your part of the world? I had thought it ended with Leon Uris' Trinity". Just kidding. Sorry if it's a bad joke. But I don't see why she got offended? Perhaps, I still have to learn more about the background history of both countries. Is it about religion?

isnt everything about religion ...its got a lot to answer for

Republic of Ireland is the usual..the one that is free and not under the UK tent. Yes funny that she got offended. She sounds an Orange one that one, loyal to the crown, a traitor as we would say
