What a disappointment

I was ready to open a jar of my home made, no sugar added apple butter, and found that I am out. You know what this means, don't you? It means I will be haunting the grocers for "ugly apples". Things that have been discounted. I will wash them, core them only, no peeling, and put them in my trusty crockpot. I will cook the living daylights out of them. I will add my favorite spices and use my stick blender and they shall become mush. Then I will can them by the water bath method. I usually add about 1/4 cup apple cider vinegar to them to make them acid enough to be safe on the shelf. It comes out so yummy. While we are having a cool spell this would be a good thing to do. It will be my next kitchen adventure.

Apples definitely aren't one of my favorite foods but Pretty eats them all the time. Once in a great while she buys apple butter and eats it on toast. I hope you enjoy making and eating yours.

I love apple butter, and I put it on my bagels in the morning before I head to work.

I made homemade apple sauce once in my crockpot, and it was the most amazing apple sauce I have ever eaten. I have no idea why I don't make it more often! lol

There are some very simple things we should do more of. Cooking for ourselves and making "real" food is one of them. Make your applesauce and tell us how it turns out.

Hmmm, I didn't think it would be that easy to create apple butter. Mom used to make us potato pancakes with apple butter ...... oh good grief, now I'm craving potato pancakes

I was stunned when I read this method online about three years ago. In my mind it involved all the peeling and coring and stirring for hours on a low flame. Now I leave the peels and put them in the crock pot and it is a cinch.

It sounds like you have quite a job ahead of you. I am sure that once you have finished the work you will enjoy the "fruits of your labor". Enjoy.

I like the fact that you make your own no added sugar apple butter. It sounds like you are going to have a real adventure making some more. Have fun and enjoy.

I've never made apple butter . . . is it essentially like concentrated, thick apple sauce? I love the smells of apple cooking in the kitchen!

Thickened applesauce with spices. Usually "apple pie spice" or "pumpkin pie spice", but essentially cinnamon, cloves, nutmeg and I add ginger and cardamom as well. Who needs to burn candles when you can just put this stuff in the crock pot!

I have never tried apple butter. And in your recipe you have not mentioned butter at all. So, I guess it's just the name and not real butter in it. Maybe it's called so because it goes like a butter spread on the toast. Enjoy making it. It sounds like a time taking one.

I guess so. It spreads smoothly, like butter and you can use it in place of butter.

@GardenGerty Oh! I see. I would like to try one and see if I like it. I am not sure if we get it here. Also, it should not have any sugar as I am diabetic.
