It's World Parrot Day

Apparently, it’s World Parrot Day which seems a good excuse to put up one of my parrot photos from our previous house.
I never know what’s a parrot and what’s a cockatoo but apparently, they are all psittacines. There are about 398 species comprising the ‘true parrots’, cockatoos and New Zealand parrots. I was surprised to learn that one-third of all parrot species are threatened by extinction. The greatest diversity of parrots is in South America and Australasia.
Typical features are a strong, curved beak, an upright stance and clawed zygodactyl feet. What is ‘zygodactyl’ you may well ask. It means, of the four claws, 1 and 4 face to the back, and 2 and 3 face forwards. This arrangement of the claws is most common in birds that climb tree trunks and move through foliage.
The bird in the photo is a Western Rosella. It’s a shame the image is a bit blurry.

I like parrots but these days I dont see them much, maybe they are towards extinction. People keep them as a pet as they imitate us. I remember my neighbor had one which they used to keep in the cage all the time. I used to feel pity for that poor bird.
Attaching the picture of a parrot which is usually found here

I never like the caged birds. How terrible and restricted they must be feeling!

The 1-4 and 2-3 combination is quite interesting!!
I was not aware that there are so many Parrot or similar species.
But yes, I had an idea about their big presence in South America. Such days are a must for ecological awareness.

@changjiangzhibin89 In the outback and northern areas, they are very common but not in our area. I wrote about corellas once which is another type of parrot but you may not have seen it. They have slowly moved down south and are now a pest in the south.

@RebeccasFarm It's a shame the person didn't have more respect for your opinion.

That parrot is a beauty.
Parrots intrigue me with their ability to talk. I remember hearing stories about my grandmother having a parrot named Nora.

@JudyEv the parrot my grandmother had was before I was born but I got the impression that my grandfather wasn't thrilled with the parrot.

It's still a beautiful bird. A lot of people have them as pets here too.

@JudyEv I believe the people that have them as pets it's because they can talk.

It's so cool to have parrots in your country. We can only see them in zoos.

@JudyEv Unless there are some in California or Florida. We never saw any. There could be some invasive species.

Such wonderful colors on the Parrot. I do hope Parakeets are also included on this day. I remember our pet Parakeet Chippy who supplied us with entertainment when we let it out of the cage.

I think most do if you get them young enough. Having a parrot never really appealed to me.
