Oh, will you look at this!? I’m sure everybody who knew this song came out in 1962 knew that it would top my list of favorites from sixty years ago. To make the kids feel old I’ll do a 40 and 50-year-old list soon. Meanwhile, to close out the month and the list, the king of 1962. #1: King of Clowns - Neil Sedaka This song tanked in the U.S. when it was released. It didn’t even make the top 40. However, an Italian-language version hit #1 in Europe. I don’t care where it was or wasn’t on the charts in 1962. (I didn’t care much about anything then, except cloth diapers. ) I love, love, LOVE this song. Happy 60th birthday to one of Sedaka’s all-time greatest songs. Thanks for reading. King of Clowns Written by Neil Sedaka and Howard Greenfield Recorded by Neil Sedaka Released as a single, 1962 Though I’m hurt still I’m proud:

I’m glad you enjoyed the countdown! Hopefully you’ll know some of the 50-year-old songs (and will think, as I do, NO WAY that is 50!).

Great song. I haven't heard it in half a lifetime.

It probably didn’t do well in America because it wasn’t the happy, upbeat stuff that people were used to from him. I think “Happy Birthday Sweet 16” was the follow-up song to this.

There should be a law against looking so young!

That’s okay, he doesn’t look that young anymore.

It is a sad song, which is probably why it didn’t do well in America. We were used to his happy songs.

Amid all of my hardcore country music and the Ramones and the Clash, I love Sedaka.

I was born in October of 1963. So, while I might have heard it before, I sure wouldn't remember it. It's not one I remember mom listening to when I was a kid.

According to the charts, it wasn’t one of his more popular songs in the 60s. That’s what we have “retrospective” and “greatest hits collections” for.

@FourWalls I'm not sure what songs mom would have listened to back then. She was born in 1921, do was a day or two old by the time I was born. When I was a teenager, the radio was always on in the kitchen where she was at but I can't remember the songs that were playing then. (I wasn't terribly interested in hearing them, like now. *shrug*)

“Send in the Clowns” is one of the best. The late Stephen Sondheim wrote that.

I thought I knew his music but this one isn't familiar. Of coarse you said it didn't chart here in the USA so there is that.

It did chart, but not into the top 40. And sandwiched between two happy upbeat songs it wasn’t going to be popular.

I am forty four but I do listen to songs that date back to fifty or sixty years and enjoy them. Some are just timeless. Sorry I have never heard this one. I am not much into music from other countries.

I understand. I don’t know that I’ve heard music from other nations or cultures that doesn’t sound similar to the western popular music I’m used to. That’s no knock on anyone, just the way we are! Thanks for stopping by.

@FourWalls We have different types of music here. Our classical and folk have no influence of others. Byt yes, some pop and rock influence can be seen in our popular danc numbers from Bollywood and other regional movie industries.
