Reset Button?

I don't know how many of you remember the 1985 movie "Back to the Future" and its sequels -- with stars , Michael J. Fox and Christopher Lloyd. In the movie Michael's character, Marty McFly travels back in time using a time machine invented by an elderly scientist - Christopher Lloyd. His mission?-- to change events which happened in the past. I sometimes imagine how nice it would be if there was a reset button on our laptops. You identify a specific period in your past, press the button and you are back in time changing whatever you want changed. If l could go back in time l would change getting married when l did. Would you want to change anything in your past?

I have read a good book by Stephen King about getting back to the past to change the events. (The title of the book 11.22.63). While reading the book I realized how even changing a small thing can cause a "chain reaction", better to let things as they are.

@Kandae11 The title of the book is the date of JFK assassination. The main character goes back in time to prevent Kennedy to be assassinated. I liked this book.

What is past is past and cannot be undone, but we can fantasize. Stephen King is known as a suspense or horror story writer, so l am not surprised that his book would deal with the possible frightening results of trying to change some past events.

I've often thought about this throughout my life. But I suppose if I did change the past, the outcome may be different from what it is today - that could be a good thing or bad thing. In any case, there are certainly better choices I could have made for myself long time ago.

@much2say l won't want that . We live one life on this earth and the next would be in the Kingdom of God, whoever makes it there. I won't mind going back and tweaking a few things - like some decisions l made, my marriage for one. That marriage caused upsets in my life which years later are still with me. However so far my life has been pretty good.

@Kandae11 I just wish I'd been kinder to a lot of people. I can excuse it by saying I was young and naive but it still hurts that I was sometimes quite unkind. And somedays the memories just won't go away and I go over and over such things. But it's okay. I'll get over it one day I guess.

@JudyEv The important thing is you are not that person anymore, and that you realize and accept that you have not always been kind. Some people go through life convincing themselves that everything they do and have done is right. No one is perfect, we all make mistakes, especially when we are young. So it is time to forgive yourself and make a difference as you are now doing.

I would. Instead of becoming a home maker and a teacher I wanted to become a professional with a good pay packet, that would make me financially independent. I wanted to become a doctor.

@Kandae11 That did not give me a stable and self- sustainable income. The one I got, I could not sustain, I had to resign as my children were too small and I couldn't get a full time maid to watch over them when I would be in school.

Financial independence is very important for women. I am sorry your dream of becoming a doctor was not fulfilled, but you are still in a very noble profession - a teacher.

I like that movie. Time traveling in all these science fictions are fascinating. To answer your question, I am not sure if I would have changed anything in the past. Certain things happened in the past which were upsetting at that time but had some good outcome later. Maybe I would have loved Dad to live longer and make some memories with me. He left at 32 and I was just a toddler.

I would have listened to myself and gone to the college I wanted to. My grandmother came in and made a suggestion that ruined me financially. The public University was cheaper and something I could afford. There became a lot of problems with financial aide. I could afford 4,000 a year with no problems. I should have listened to my ideas because I knew my situation best. I also would not have continued to go to high school after 16. I would have gone to night school. Much less stress, life is better in the evenings. But you give in to pressures from family. I think I would have achieved more of what I wanted to achieve had I followed my plan.

@Kandae11 thank you. i went into financial ruin trying to keep up with other people. family can say go to this college but cannot offer a dime or tell you how to pay for it. and the price went up every year. When i saw i had to be in debt over 50,000 dollars i had to stop going. i had to move and pay bills and buy food. This was instability and very hard to study under these conditions. Many classes i did not finish and i wound up out of all that money. if you fail or get incompletes you are out of money. i decided i cannot afford to waste another dime. one of these days i plan on completing that degree. but at my pace and without instability.

That happens quite often in families, and it is unfortunate. Many children have taken up careers they don't really like in order to please their parents. If they decide to go their own way - they are labeled a rebel. Anyway, these days young people are much more assertive and do exactly what they want.l am sorry you missed out on some of the things you could have had.
